Sydney, Monday. A terrific gale raged all night, with heavy rain. It still continues. No serious casualities have yet been reported. A fire occurred at Pootscray Dynamite Factory, near Melbourne, at which a man named Bates was burned to death. Later. The gale is still blowing, but the squalls are less violent. The Pacific Mail Steamer Australia dragged ber anchor, and the ships Tweed and Greta went ashore. A number of small craft were also driven ashore. Great damage has been done to property in the suburbs. Melbourne, Monday. The Union Company's steamer Wakatipu will probably proceed to Sydney to-morrow. The chemical works of Canning, Smith, and Co. have been destroyed by fire; damages £10,000. Arrived — Ringarooma. Sailed— Arawata.
