THE HAND, OINCE the introduction of Hand Sewing Machines, attempts have constantly been made to prove that tbey are fit to supersede the original Treadle Machines, but intending purchasers are requested to examine the matter and decide for themselves whether their claims are' well founded, and whether also the objections raised (frequently by interested parties) to the uso of the Treadle can be sustained by faots. The advertiser submits that each kind of machine Is good in its proper place, — the " Hand " for those young ladies who may have occasion frequently to change tbeir place of abode, or for those who are unable to give the small amount of time and trouble necessary to learn thoroughly the art (once acquired, of life long value), of using a " Treadle " Machine, and also for the very few who are physically unable ito use the foot motion. But when the lady of the house deBires to do a large quantity of sewing io the best manner, and in the hast possible time, A good Treadle Machine ia unequalled. That the use of the feet in sewing is injurious to health is a matter upon wbich the " Doctors differ," and any lady anxious upon that point would do well to consult her own medical adviser, who, in giving bis opinion, would perhaps make some slight distinction between the probable effects of using a Machine wbich requires much power to drive it, and one which runs lightly, as does the " Wheeler and Wilson.
