The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1876.
We understand that Mr Hugh Thompson, son of Mr Thompson, of Richmond, and for some time a pupil at the Nelson College, has been appointed third master of the Bridgestreet school. The Canterbury footballers met with another marked success in "Wellington, where they played yesterday, and beat the local team by 18 points. It will be seen by our telegrams that they are to [be received with open arms by the i Christchurch people on their return. A football match will be played in the Botanical Reserve to-morrow iafternoon between fifteen of the College Cadets and a like number of the Artillery and City Sifie Cadets. A fine display of early lambs in excdient condition was to be seen ir Air Warren's shop to-day. They are cross-breds, and were reared on his farm at Hope. The Ball Committee of the Naval Brigade last evening decided to call for tenders for the right to sell refreshments at the calico and fancy dress ball, to be held on the 19th instant. The price of admission was fixed at five shillings to admit one gentleman and one or more ladiea; admission to gallery, half-a-crowh. It was also decided to place no restriction upon the kind of calico to be worn by the ladies, so that they can appear in either bleached, unbleached, or fancy print, and they are also to be allowed trimmings, but gentlemen must wear a fancy dress, or if appearing in evening dress must have a calico saah on. Volunteers will be allowed to appear in uniform, and members of the Naval v ßrigade will wear a calico sash in addition to their uniform. The members of the Naval Brigade are reminded that the firing for the General Government orduance prizes will take place to-morrow afternoon at three o'clock. As this will be the first time that the Naval Brigade will fire for prizes with their *• babies " considerable interest is felt in the result, and the competition between the different gun detachments is expected to be keen. A floating target will be anchored at about a mile from the shore, and coasting vessels are requested to keep out of the line of fire. The Church Messenger for the current month contains a variety of interesting information on local and other subjects connected with the Church of England.
