The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 1876.

The long looked for and welcome division list has at last made its appearance, and the result is much as was expected, a majority against the Separation resolutions of 16, the numbers given being 47 to 31, although there appears to be some little discrepancy between this and the list of names, which shows 31 for and 46 against. As the debate from beginning to end assumed the tone of one on a no confidence motion, it might under ordinary circumstances have been expected that the Government, with such a majority, would have been permitted t° go on with their measures, so far, at least, as to get them into Committee, but such, it appears, is not to be the case, Sir George Grey having given notice that he will move that the Counties and Financial Arrangements Bills be read that day six mor^hs. This will give members an additional opportunity of airing their eloquence, and many of them will probably take advantage of it to the extent of repeating in other words that which they have already said in the debate just closed. Sir George Grey would be acting with far greater credit to himself and more satisfaction to the public if he would at once bring down a motion of want of confidence, and, having tried the relative strength of the two opposing parties, accept the result, whether favorable to himself or otherwise, as final. He might then allow the business of the House to be proceeded with, instead of proving himself so determined an obstructionist.
