CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the 'Evening Mail.'

Sib -Was there a slight mistake in the statement, that appeared in the Maii, the other day respecting the amount collected towards defraying the expense of the Rev Mr Thorpe's visit to England for the recruiting of his health, or did the word " Nelson " signify [not the town, but the province of that name? I ask this question because it is the fact, I believe, that the Waimeas and Motueka, in addition to Motueka Valley and the Suburban Villages, contributed as well as Nelson City •proper, and sympathisers in Wellington, I have heard it stated, added their contributions. Excuse this apparently querulous note.— l am, &c, Query.

[The following is the paragraph in the Ciiuhch Messenger from which we derived our information .•—" We are much pleased to learn that a movement was set ou foot to present to the Yen. Archdeacon Thorpe some small acknowledgment of the appreciation of his work in Nelson before leaving for England. Tbe evening before he sailed he was informed that £230 was afc his disposal for the voyage, of which £130 had been in a very short time collected in various places in Nelson and neighboring suburbs, including a contribution from Wellington, while in the parish of All Saints the sum of £50 was collected very readily, notwithstanding that a present had been made so recently as last Easter. We are thus able to report that within a fortnight, instead of two months, the £50 from the Pension Fund was restored to it, indicating the approval of the scheme, and the sympathy felt for the Archdeacon."]

A comet was, it is alleged, observed from Greytown, on Thursday morning, in a southerly direction. The Standard says the observer was perfectly sober, and that the tail of the comet was swelling visibly before his ?ery eyes.
