A crowded public meeting was held in thd Town Hall, the Mayor in tbe chair, to cons'der the state of the Hokitika river. The following resolution was cirried: —•*' -That itis highly necessary for the sifety of the port that all tha water of the Hokiiika river be concentrated into one channel; that the Borough Council be requested to take the advice of some competent engineer with regard to the advisability of making a wingdam at or near lhe point where the old. wingdam stood* for the purpose of turning the water running down the north channel into the lagoon; and that the Borough Council be requested to spend such turns as may be necessary to give effect to these resolutions." There is considerable esciiement here on account of a memorial having besn sent by the Sabbath Observance Committee tj the Minister for Public Works, in whi<;h it; was state! that the community .as a whole were opposed to trains running on Sundays. A large number of leading gentlemeu have taken ihe matter up, and a counter memorial is now being very numerously signed. Letters are now appearing in the papers accusing the ministers compobiog the Sabbath Observance Committee of falsehoods.
