[Press Agency.] Wellington, Monday. The Luna is engaged iv souuding in Cook's Straits with the object of getting a course, free of rocks for the second cable. Oaptaiu Johnson conducts the survey. The deep sea sounding machine (Sir Wiliiim Thompson's invention) has been found to answer admirably. The principal part of the work is now completed, and the Luna will probably return to-morrow. The De Murska, cincerts have been so crowded that a eecond season is announced. Post Ciulmers, Saturday. Arrived —The shipNorv.il, from London. Site brings 40 passengers, 2000 tons general cargo, and 30 tons of powder stowed in a properly constructed magazine. Reports sighting icebergs on July 17 in lat 49dfg. Hokitika, Stturd'iy. A crowded public meeting was held in thd Town Hall, the Mayor in tbe chair, to cons'der the state of the Hokitika river. The following resolution was cirried: —•*' -That itis highly necessary for the sifety of the port that all tha water of the Hokiiika river be concentrated into one channel; that the Borough Council be requested to take the advice of some competent engineer with regard to the advisability of making a wingdam at or near lhe point where the old. wingdam stood* for the purpose of turning the water running down the north channel into the lagoon; and that the Borough Council be requested to spend such turns as may be necessary to give effect to these resolutions." The opinion of. the tneeting was that if a harbor trust; was appointed, the money expended would be rtfutidcd' A Ratepayers Committee was appointed to confer with the Borough Council on the 6Ubje:t. New Plymouth, Monday. There is considerable esciiement here on account of a memorial having besn sent by the Sabbath Observance Committee tj the Minister for Public Works, in whi<;h it; was state! that the community .as a whole were opposed to trains running on Sundays. A large number of leading gentlemeu have taken ihe matter up, and a counter memorial is now being very numerously signed. Letters are now appearing in the papers accusing the ministers compobiog the Sabbath Observance Committee of falsehoods.
