The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JULY 13, 1876.

The Naval Brigade will muster at the Boat Shed tc-morrow morning at half-past six to land his Excellency the Marquis of Normanby from the Luna. His Excellency the Marquis o Normanby, accompanied by Captain Maling and Lord Hervey Phipps, are to leave Wellington for Nelson in the Luna this evening, and will arrive tomorrow morning. The visit is strictly a private one, and his Excellency will be the guest of W. Oldham, Esq., of Wakapuaka, where he will enjoy a few days quail shooting. We remind our readers of the dramatic entertainment to be given by the Good Templars at the Odd-Fellows' Hall this evening. " Ten nights in a bar room " is the title of the piece to be presented, and the acting promises to be really good. Wo hope to see a crowded house. A service of song will be held at the Temperance Hall this evening. Aw interesting and pleasant meeting of those connected with the Baptist Sunday School took place yesterday evening in the schoolroom adjoining the Baptist Church. Tea was provided at six o'clock in the afternoon, and a goodly number of persons partook thereof. Full justice having been done to the good things provided, the usual after meeting followed, when the chair was occupied by Mr Newberry, the Superintendent of the Sunday School, who, in an excellent speech, referred to the progress the school had made during the last year, and stated that at the pjesent time the names of 116 scholars were on the books, and that the number of teachers was sixteen. He hoped the year to come would j greatly increase the number both of | teachers and scholars. The pastor of the church, the .Rev D. Dolamore, Mr J. J£, Hooper, and others also addressed the meeting, the speeches being interspersed with readings and recitations by several members of the church, which added greatly to the enjoyment of those present. The choir at intervals sang several of Sankey's hymns in a most creditable manner, and a vote of thanks was tendered to them for their services. A vote of thanks was also given to the ladies who had provided the tea, and the benediction brought the meeting to a close. Ifc is the intention of those interested to arrange for similar meetings in future, to be held quarterly, which, if they are as great a success as that of last night, are sure to be productive of happy results. ~~f-&s it is probable that the repoit of the Inspector of Schools is not perused in its entirety by general readers, we extract the following as being worthy of separate publication. Mr Hodgson, in referring to the Lower Takaka school, says:—" An instance of the pursuit of knowledge under unusual difficulties, on the part of a scholar here, is worth recording. A lad of 15, who has had no previous schooling, attends regularly, though his home is separated from his sehool by nearly eight miles of a rough hill-track and an unfordable river. To cross the latter, he has hewn out a canoe for himself, and each week trudges 75 miles and ferries himself over a dangerous creek ten times, in order to obtain instruction that many who live within a few hundred yards of the school hold very cheap." When Sir Julius Vogel, in the House last night, read the telegram announcing the death of Abdul Aziz, late Sultan of Turkey, Mr Andrew was heard to mutter, " Then, • Abdul-as-is ' is now c Abdul-as-was.'" — N.Z.
