THE BREACH IN THE BOULDER BANK.
To THE EDITOR OV THE 'EVENING MAIL.' Sir— l see it noticed in your yesterday's issue that the "unusually high tide and severe storm " has made " a small breach in the Boulder Bink," and that the JHarbor Master visited the spot and " does not attach any importance to the damage done." Now, Sir, I beg to differ from Captain Cross, and I, think that the breach as soon as discoveredshould have been stopped at once, as eyeay high tide must make it wider, and consequently tends to fill the harbor. I hive before now pointad out the bad consequence of stoves being allowed to be taken off the Boulder Bank, and thereby making the gaps at the lower end to get'. deeper and bring more silt in by every ;tido, and of course be less protection to the shippine, aud also tend to lessen the water. on the bar, as the force of the tide is directed through thoie gaps which form the bar, or in a great measure help to keep it up. I think it is time that Nelson people looked to their own interests and made the authorities attend to the_e matters. As you justly remarked, " It cannot, however, be too carefully watched," therefore I would advise the people of Nelson not to allow any stones to be taken off the bank, and any fresh gaps or breaches in the bank to be ("stopped at once before many tons are washed over this side. I am iu a posi'ion to show the authorities how much each tide brings in of silt or t:ike3 out (if any); also it is my humble opinion that if those old breaches were stopped the bar wonld move fur tie- out, and perhaps become deeper. You will oblige me by finding space lor this.— l am, &c, Ekick Ohk; Ne' son, July"! 2, 1876.
