On the Ist instant (says the Wanganui Chronicle) a very sad death occurred up the River Bank, the circumstances attending which are exceptionally painful. The deceased, whose name was Miss Elizabeth Hood, came up from Christchurch on purpose to get united in marriage to a resident of Maxwelltown. The sea voyage appears to have been very trying to the young lady's constitution who suffered acutely. On arrival here medical aid was procured, but though intermittent relapses to mental and physical vigor occurred, the disease appeared to have been too deeply and after having lost much blood, the poor girl breathed her last about eleven a.m. The poisonous spider of New Zealand, the " Katipo," is fortunately not often met with, its bite being dangerous. We (Napier Mercury) regret to report that on Thursday our esteemed fellow-townsman, Mr Witty, was bitten by one of the insects while working in his garden. The spider crawled on to the palm of his right hand, and in killing it by closing his fingers Mr Witty felt a sharp prick between the thumb and fore-fiuger, which was instantly followed by a painful sensation running up the arm to the shoulder. As soon as possible he came to town, and some fsnake-bite antidote was- applied to the limb, but at noon the hand and arm were paralysed. Medical advice was then obtained, and, we trust will be attended by beneficial results. An advertiser in the Inangahua Times invites tenders for purchase of a debt of honor for £6, subject to a slight set-off for nobblers. A German inventor, William F. Schroeder of Baltimore, ia said to have submitted to the New York Engineer's Association a model of an airship, designed for carrying the mails between America and Europe. The air-ship is to be steered by a hydraulic apparatus of 8-horse power, and to be carried by a gas balloon. Tbe ship weighs 280*0 lbs;- and has a carrying capacity of 12,OO0Ibs; its minimum rate of progress is estimated at seventy miles an hour. Experiments are now being made with it ; should they be successful, a proposal will be made to Congress I entrust the mail service to air-ships. It is understood (says the Grey River Argus) that the Hon. Mr Scotland bas written to the Government, apologising for his letter to Mr Grant, of Dunedio.
