CITY COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Council was held last night, the Mayor in the chair. A letter was read from Wilkies and party stating that they would rather forfeit their deposit than proceed with their contract for filling up St. Vincent street, as they had made an error in their calculations. The forfeit was accepted, and after some discussion it was agreed to accept the second tender, namely that of Messrs Wise and party for £5_5 10s. It was resolved that 1000 yards of cubic gravel should be obtained for the Haven-road. The Mayor reported that there was a balance to credit at the Bank of £431 ; that the arrears for the current year were £21G, and for last year £127. He took occasion to compliment Mr Flett on the manner in which he collected the rates. A proposition from the Secretary of the Para Para Company to supply Collingwood coal at a smaller price if a quantity were taken was referred to the Gas and Waterworks Committee. The following tenders were accepted: — D. Barnett and Co., for supplying Wakapuaka gravel at 8s 6d per load; Bray and party, for Adele Island stone at 15s 6d per yard. Cr J. A. Harley waa appointed a member of the Finance Committee. Cr T. Harley produced a report on the road round the Rocks, signed by Messrs Lightfoot, Thompson, Akersten, and Malcolm, estimating the coat of a dray road at £500. He also stated that residents in the neighborhood had promised to contribute £125 towards the work. The discussion was postponed until next meeting in order that the guarantees of the parties referred to might be obtained. j The Council *,ben adjourned.
