The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, APRIL 6, 1876.
iMa. B. Jaoksojt, another. of our old settlers, departed this life this morning. Until about four years ago he was a very hearty man, when he sufferd from a stroke of paralysis, since which timo he has been more or less feeble. He was driven out yesterday by his son-in-law, Mr M. Lightband, and appeared as cheerful as be usually did, but about midnight heavy breathing came on, and he died about seven o'clock. Mr. Jackson .with his family landed from the Phcebe* thirty-three years ago last week, and has always been resdeeted for his energy in both social and political life. Many will miss the cheery and hearty look of the old gentleman; ;- The membera of the Waimea South Jockey Club and Wakefield Cricket Club iutend giving a dinner at the Forest Inn to-morrow evening to Mr Sellon, prior to his leaving for England. Np one has done more to encourage;' every description of manly sports in that -district than Mr Sellon, and to him is to a great extent owing the success that has attended the . Wakefield -Cricket Club, to the members of which he, himself an enthusiastic {and educated cricketer, has imparted much valuable instruction. That the dining room will be crowded to-morrow night, and that the kindly wishes for the. welfare of the guest of .the evening which will then be given expression to wili be heartfelt and sincere, none who know how deservedly popular is Mr Sellon in that district can for one moment doubt. , All the City and Port Volunteers ar;e ordered to parade for battalion drill ati seven o'clock this evening. \ I The Artillery Cadets turned out yesterday, for shot and shell practice, with .the 12-pounder Armstrong gtin, with which they made some very fair shooting. r : The alarm of fire was raised yesterday afternoon, and gave rise "to the usual excitement. The cause was a quantity of smoke that was seen issuiug from a small cottage in the Wood, occupied by Mr M'Kinna, where a child had been playing with a firestick which had done the mischief. The brigade turned out smartly, but before they could reach the spot the flames, had, been extinguished by the members of the Artillery Cadets, who were pass- . ing at the time. I Tns Hibernicon Troupe having been detained by the non-arrival of tbe Phcobe at her expected time iutend giving another entertainment to-night, which, if it be at all equal to that of last' evening, should attract another crowded audience, Miss Stoneham's performances alone being well, worth the charge for admission. The rapidity with which she^ changes her dress and character,' and her excellent dancing, especially of the sailor's hornpipe, brought down the house last night, and willfdelight all who take the last opportunity to be afForde.d to-night of witnessing sp .cleyei* an actress. -
