OUR SPORTING CORRESPONDENT " Cheval " — who, we may say, is one of the principal authorities- in New Zealand on such matters — supplies us today with a communication which will be read with interest by those who are fond of racing. ' At the Licensing Court to-day, tbe license of the Bush Tavern was transferred from J. H. Tregea to James Fields. The applicant did not appear, and tbe Bench stated that on future occasions no application would be granted in the absence of the person making it. There are, in round numbers, £1000 to be run for on the "West Coast during tbe current mouth. A prisoner named John Von der Sloat — or, as he is commonly called, Von Sluicebox — was brought up this morning in tbe Charles Edward to take his trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court for shooting, with intent to kill, at -Charles Williams, known as German Charley. The affair took place at Rowe's accommodation house at Matakitaki, tbe circumstances being as follows: — Tbe prisoner bad had three or four glasses to drink, and Howe refused to give him any more. He tbeu went out, and Howe went to bed, leaving Williams in charge. Prisoner came back and still wanted some drink, which Williams refused. Tbey both went out, and prisoner raised a gun which he bad in his hand and fired at Williams, who was standing three or four yards from bim, but was fortunately struck by only three or four shots, which grazed his head without hurting him much, tbe remainder lodging in the verandah post and wall. This toolf. place on the 21st of February, it was reported to the Inspector of Police in Nelson on the 26th, and he telegraphed at once to the Lyell. Prisoner was arrested on the 28th, and committed for trial by Mr C. Broad, R.M., on the 3rd instant. A tea and public meeting in celebration of the Wesleyan Church anniversary will be held at Richmond to-

morrow afternoon, when addresses will be delivered, and musical selections sung by the Nelson choir. A special train will leave Nelson at 5 p.m. for llich : j mond, returning at 10 p.m. ' The time for the drawing in Messrs Wymond and Co.'s Art Union has been altered from Thursday, the 9th, to Friday, the 17th instant. The Artizans' entertainment last night, at the Oddfellows' Hall, was, as we anticipated, thoroughly successful so far as the performers were concerned, but we are sorry to say not equally so financially, the audience being very limited in number. This is much to be regretted considering the object in view, namely, that of providing the Society's small but excellent library with more books. We sincerely trust that they will meet with a larger measure of success on the next occasion of their giving a performance. That of last night consisted of the one act drama "A phenomenon in a smock frock," and the farce " Cherry Bounce," with step dancing and feats on the horizontal bar in the interval, the whole forming a capital programme, which was very creditably carried out. Lycll Argus is a queer little journal not quite so big as a sheet of foolscap, and altogether is a» harmless looking a little paper aa it is possible to imagine. Still the proprietor appears to have given offence to somebody. So, at least, we judge from the following advertisement, which appears in the columns of our wee contemporary of Saturday last :-— " A liberal reward "will be paid for information that will lead to the conviction of the msiguided individual who broke into my office and wrecked (sic.) his miserable vengeance on my unoffending type. — Proprietor Lyi 11 Argus."
