CITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night, Cr Webb in the chair.
Several letters of small importance were read and dispose 1 of.
A discussion took place regarding the state of the Maitai bridge, It was stated that Mr Ak rs en, tlu Superintendent of Pubic Works, had received instructions to repair that o< c at Collingwoo'i-street. The City Surveyors report upon road works was read and discussed. It referred to the state in which St Vincent str* ot hud been left on the coinp<etion of the i ail way works, and .that to put the street in order and construe; a culvert would cost £3*oo The Town Clerk was 'instruct d to write t the proper .authorities requesting that theo street might' be put in the same stats ot repair as it wus before the commencement of the railway. . . . • . . • ;«_- The same officer's report on the gasworks was read.: Its ate 1 that the excavation for the r>ew g sonicter was p ocefding satlsiactotily, and would be ready f»v the meter when it arrived The following extract, refers to the quantity and quafity of the coal uieity &c. :-~ .
" The quantity of coal carbonized at th e^ works from Dec 29, at 0 p.m., to Jan. 20, a 1 6pm., has teen 2u tons 11 cwts, and the quantity of gas ptoduc.d from tuch quantity of coal has leen 176,270 culio fett, oeing n Jractiun over 85; 7 feet per ton. Ab Messrs. Bu r iord and Cross have bow c ompleteci their contract for the delivery of 1 60 tot-s of ioal, .it will be necessary, as soon as possible, to moke either fun her arrangements with Me.-srs Burford «nd Cross, or advertise for lresb tende'6, for delivery over the Coriorition Wharf. It was lesolveJ, on the motion of Cr Everett, Becomed by Ur Pickering, •'That the consideration of the proposal contained in the Mayor's letter in reference t.> subscription to the bathing scheme, be po.-tpooed until the next fortnightly meeting." On the mo aon ot Cr Hooper, seconded by Cr Everett, the C ty Surveyor was sppoiriteJ Inspector of Hackuey Carriages.
