The Nelson Eveening Mail. TUESDAY, JANUARY 18, 1876.
yv js nave received several communications from residents in the country expressing approval of the suggestion w^ made the other day regarding an alterati?* l * Q the railway time table. The feeling a^? Dears to be general that the hour named for the afternoon train to leave Nelson — half-pa^ two — will be too early for the convenience of those who may have to visit town on business, as the up train will not arrive before eleven, "We would therefore once more take <th« xjpportunity of impressing upon the authorises the desirability of fixing the (time jfor the departure of the afternoon dow;n train j at least an hour later. Another sug- • gestion has been made which we are : disposed to endorsed, namely, that a j train should leave for Biemond at noon I each day, returning to town at once. This, if the other proposed alteration be effected, would allow a stay of two and a half hours in town, and would suit the convenience of many, includ- {
ing passengers by the Motueka coach, which arrives at Richmond at twelve o'clock on three days of the week. We do not for a moment contend that this extra train would pay at first, but believe that, as the convenience came to be appreciated, it would tend to a considerably increased passenger traffic which in the course of a few weeks would prove remunerative. It may be that with the small staff that would be employed on the line this could not be done, but of this we do not pretend to know anything. We merely suggest what appears to us likely to suit the convenience of the public, leaving it to the authorities to decide whether or not it is practicable.
