The anniversary of the Baptist Sunday School will be celebrated by a tea meeting to-morrow evening, when addresses will be delivered by ministers and other friends. Last evening the Naval Brigade mustered for the monthly inspection under charge of Lieutenant Gully, falling in opposite the Port Fire Brigade Hall. About forty members of the corps were present, and were put through the usual manoeuvres by Capt. Marshall, after which they marched, headed by the Fife and Drum Band of the Artillery Cadets, down to the Rocks, up Mary Ann street, through Washington Yalley, round the town, and then home. The men presented a sailorlike and orderly appearance. A meeting of the Port Boating Club was held at the Port Fire Brigade Hall last evening, Mr J. Grarrard in the chair. Over thirty members were enrolled, and paid their subscriptions. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: — Commodore, Mr J. Garrard ; Vice-Commodore, Mr W. Akersten ; Secretary, Mr Chris. Cross ; Treasurer, Mr J. S. Cross, jun. A code of rules was drawn up and adopted. It was agreed to ask A. J. Richmond, Esq., M.H.R., and Millar, Esq., F.S.A., to be patrons of the club. The meeting then adjourned until Monday, January 31st, and in the interim a canvass for members will be made. We desire to acknowledge with thanks a letter from Mr Millar, F.S.A., in reply to our leader of yesterday regarding the delay in commencing the new wharf. We admit at once that we wrote under the impression that it was owing to suitable plans not having been supplied by the Provincial Engineer that the erection of the new wharf had not been commenced. From Mr Millar's letter, however, it appears that this is not the case, but that the delay is owing to other causes. What these are the public have a right to know. We have done some service in having induced Mr Millar to state that the blame does not rest with him. The next thing to find out is why the Provincial Government, having plans at their disposal, have not proceeded with a work which is essential to the well i being of the port, town, and province of Nelson. | A meeting of those desirous of joining the Nelson Rowing Club was held last night, Mr Fell in the chair. The report of the Sub-Committee appointed to canvass the town showed that fifty-five had signified their willingness to join as active members, and twenty-eight as honorary members. This was considered quite a sufficient basis upon which to form the club, which it was decided should be called " The Nelson Rowing Club." It was resolved that the Right Reverend the Bishop of Nelson be requested to as act President, and Dr Boor as VicePresident. Mr Maling was elected Secretary and Treasurer, and authorised to collect the subscriptions. The following gentlemen were appointed a Committee to draw up rules, purchase the boats, and generally to undertake the management of the Club affairs : — Captain Marshall, Messrs Fell, T. and H. Wimsett, Tehnent, Menary, and Blackett. A lecture, the subject of which will be " Absalom/' will be delivered at the Congregational Church this evening by the Rev. J. Parkins. A oolleotion will be made at the close in aid of the building fund.
