CITY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the City Council was held last night to discuss the proposed water extension. — Cr Habley moved his resolution, and said that he still thought the large extensions were unnecessary. . He referred to the remarks made by the Daily Times upon Mr Levestam as incorrect and uncalled for. — Cr Levied seconded the resolution, but thought the pipe should be a 12-inch instead of a 10-inch one.-— CtEvebett showed that the plan proposed by Cr Harley had originally emanated from Mr Lightfoot who should be credited with it. After thinking the matter over, he had come to the conclusion that the whole of the proposed extensions were not required. He agreed generally with Cr Harley's resolution, but suggested an alteration in the wording. — Cr Harley agreed to the proposed amendment. — Cr Hoopek was in favor of the extension to the upper parts of the town. He had heard that unless this were done the Hospital and Lunatic Asylum would be privately supplied from the hills, which would occasion a loss of revenue to the extent of £70 a year. — Cr Pickering supported the resolution as he could not agree to a scheme involving a certain loss. — Or Ghat thought that by the additional buildings in the town and the supply required by the railway the revenue would be so increased as to protect them from loss if the extensions were carried out. — Cr Waters thought that it should be ascertained what the actual supply and consumption of the town was. — Cr "Webb was in favor of the extension, which he hoped would only be postponed fop a time. — Tim resolution as amended was then put and agreed to as follows : — " That in the opinion of this Council it is not at present advisable to extend the water supply as recommended in the Surveyor's report, but that it is expedient that the construction of a new dam, and the laying of a 12-inch pipe to the reservoir, as recommended by the Surveyor in his reports of April 7, Novem^ ber 15, and January 4, should be pro.eeeded with as speedily as possible, thereby securing to the city a sufficient supply of water," — Cr Everett reported, as Chairman of the Finance Committee, that the proposed gas ex*tension would cost £2500, water extension already authorised £275, and the works sanctioned by the resolution just passed £1600, so that £5000 should be borrowed in order to meet all contingencies. .He stated that at present there was the sum of £541 to the credit of the gasworks. — The proposition to borrow £5000 was then agreed to. — The tenders for debentures were then opened, and proved to be as follows : — 1, Messrs* $ell and Atkinson, two debentures, £-200 a|b £95 each; 2. Messrs Fejll apd Atkinson, two debenture^ £20,0 at £95. each $ $. Mr W. C. Harley, for A.Q.F., two debentures, £200 at par; 4. Mr J. yjf. ten debentures, £1000 at £#2 each j 5. J. Sharp, as trustee for Jphn ijDinline, forty-two debentures, £42.00 at £95 - I *. All were accepted except Mr ££*«£-«• Pr* ma adjourned.
