The Nelosn Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JANUARY 15, 1876.
A large number of their friends met on the wharf this morning to bid farewell to Captain and Mrs Rough, who took their final departure from Nelson by the Phoebe, en route for England. Captain Hough is one of those whom we can ill afford to lose, and his loss will be severely felt in Nelson, for whenever a charitable action was to be done his was the hand to do it. He carries with him the good wishes of all his numerous acquaintances. JLMv Cfllen, a storekeeper at the Lyell, started from Nelson to-day ia a trap for that district, the first conveyance, we believe, that has penetrated so for into the Buller Valley from this end. It is Mr Oullen's intention, as soon as he has made the necessary arrangements, to run his conveyance regularly between here and the Lyell, and we wish him every success in his undertaking. v In the window of Mr Jones' saddler's shop in Bridge-street, is to be seen the Champion Cup to be run for at the next Foresters' fete on the Ist of February. We have been shown to-day some excellent specimens of electro-plating by Mr Jones of Brook-street Valley, who has been engaged at this description of work for many years past. Some articles, such as spoons and forks, upon which he has operated, have stood the wear and tear of seven years, and are described as still being as good as new. A eewabd of five pounds is offered for such information as will lead to the conviction of the person who set fire to a haystack belonging to Mr Drake of Nile-street east, on Thursday night. Whoever he may be, we trust the scoundrel will be discovered. The Key W. Keall will preach in the Wesleyan Church to* morrow morning and evening. A special religious service will be held in the Volunteer Drill Shed tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock. The service will have reference to the recent deaths of members of the Order of Good Templars. The Revs Dolaraore, Beckenham, Parkin, and Mr B. Short will take part. It was at first proposed to hold an open air service, but the Drill Shed has been kindly lent in case of unfavorable weather. Sermons in connection with the Sunday School Anniversary will be preached at the Baptist Chapel, Bridgestreet, to-morrow, in the morning by Major Paton, and in the evening by the Rev. D. Dolamore. Last night the Artillery Cadets were inspected by Captoin Marshall, after which they marched with their Fife and Drum Bund round through the Wood, and along Nile Street back to the Drill Shed. The members of the band ere making rapid improvement under their leader, Mr Scott, and are a credit to their company and to themselves. Unfortunately the nett proceeds of the entertainment given in aid of this band a short time Bince only amounted to a little over £4, but we believe it is the intention of the company in the course of a month or so to give an entertainment, when an entirely new piece will be performed. Several large bush fires have been raging in the country surrounding Reefton during the last forty-eight hours. On Saturday evening the fire maa '£ its way aspng the dwellings on the Buller r °ad, and ior *o«n© hours kept the inhabitants in a state of coT" swjteru ol6 alarm. The trunks of several standing trees fire and burned until the .frees ?£!*> * a some instances

Langbridge and Silver, proprietors of the Waikato Times, a claim for £500 damages for wrongful dismissal, will not be heard during this civil sittings of the Supreme i Court, it having been postponed till April next. Precautions against the spread of ! typhoid fever, which have been drawn up and circulated in England by order of the sanitary authorities, have been reprinted for free circulation by the General Government of New Zealand' | A number of copies hare been sent for distribution to Nelson. The cod- j eluding paragraph says: — "If fever be in your neighborhood, but not ac yet in your house, tßke the following precautions to keep it out : — Drink no water that is open to the least suspicion, or, if you can get no other, boil it i before drinking. Use no closet or j privy that is used by houses in which j there is already fever. Give immedi- i ate notice to the Sanitary Inspector of any nuisance in your neighborhood, such as a stinking drain or gully, heaps of offensive refusse, and the like. Use all your influence to insist upon the preceding precautions being strictly carried out by your neighbors whoae houses are already infected." Since the 29th November, one firm of auctioneers in Cbristchurch have sold some £14,000 worth of freehold property. About £30,000 worth of property in the city, suburbs, and rural districts, has thus been sold in twenty days for fear of a heavy increase in taxation. Many more sales are advertised. A Wanganui paper of a recent date says:— "The night before the occurrence of the fatal accident at the railway bridge, the now widowed Mrs Reynolds dreamt that she saw her husband drowning, and woke bim by her screams for assistance. The dream exercised a very depressing effect upon her all the next day, and she found it an impossibility to divest herself of the impression that the dream was a persentiment of approaching evil. When the person to whom was deputed the delicate task of breaking the sad news to her that she was a widow approached, Mrs Reynolds saw her ooming, and bursting into tears, exclaimed, ' you need not tell me, I know what has happened, ray hueband is drowned.'
