Melbourne, January 7. Political matters are in a state of stagnation owing to the holidays. The revenue returns for the year have not yet been issued. Parliament meats again next Tuesday, when it is probable the Opposition will,; proceed to their policy in preventing the progress of business, at any rate as far as the Budget is concerned. The Hon. Michael O'Grady, M.L. A , and formerly Minister of Works, died rather suddenly on Wednesday last. He was managing director of the Australian Alliance Assurance Compaoy. A coasting vessel, the Isabella, was caught in a squall at the Heids and wreaked. The crew.waa eared. The Intercolonial Cricket match resulted in tavor of New South Wales by one innings aod one run, the respective Bcores being : — New South Wales, 171; Victoiii, Ist innings, IS6; 2od innings, 34; total, 170. It was a most shameful beating, aud was mainly owing to tne excellent bowliug of the Syduey meD. The return match will oe ptayed in Sydney at the end of February next. Pedigree bulls ranged at £174 '6s; pedigree heifers, £ 123 18s; pure shorthorn bulls, £39. John Foley, an hotelkeeper, has been committed for trial for manslaughter of Micba 1 Quinlaa through violence in ejecting him from his house. The inquest on Albert Berth resulted in Dr Beary being exonerated from cutpable negligence, buc the jury added a rider in favor of the hospital regulations being strictly adhered to. Scarlet fever has not quite disappeared yet. Several cases continue to be reported in various parts of the colony. The steamship St Osyth has made the quickest passage on record, hiving ariived in foriy three days eighteen hours. The Journal of Commerce, atter twenty years of publication, has ceased. The eight hours' strike at Echaca has ended. Several candidates are mentioned for the seat rendered vacant by Mr O'Grady's deiitb. It is probable the Minister of Uailways will stand. A rumour is current of the failure of a large Brisbane firm, with considerable liabillies, mostly due to English creditors. The Hacinij Club yesterday disqualified P. Don ling, whose horse w<m pulled iu the rnce on New Year's Day. During tbe past few days the weather has been very cold with diarp frosts ia various parts of iho colony. The City of ban Francisco and Mikado arrived at Sydney eirly this morning, the former grounded on the Sow and Pigs going in but soon got off. The Kingarooma made the passage from tt e West Coast in 4 dayß 8 hours, the fastest yet made. The Mongolia, with tbe Suez mail is expected to day. but the news has nearly all been anticipated.
