NELSON REGATTA.

To hie Editor ok the 'Evening Mail.' Sir ~ Your correspondent "Coxswain" in last n'ght's Mail, who I presume from the tone of his letter is one of the Regatta Committee, in mild though somewhat discursive terms, states that I am under a f-ilae impression with regard to the four-oared race. Allow me to state for the edification of " Coxswain " that I have perused the p >pers over and over again, but found nothing to justify the Committee in the action they have taken in this matter. According to your correspondent it was at the request of the . Wellington men " that a certain sum was given for a four-oared race," but allow me to ask him whether if that request had come from the boating men of Nelson instead of Welling6>nit wi uld have been acceded to? I think not. Why was a meetinsr of the Regat'a Committee not called earlier, bo as to give the boitbu'lders of Nelson a chance of building a b->at to conpete with Wellington? Again I say it is unfair to Nelson m n. Your correspondent slightly draws on his imagination if he thinks I imagine the Wellington men wo.u'd phce their inferior boits at the disposal of Nelson. I firmly believe that they would give Nelson the choice of boats, but what would be the good of th*t when our men are deficient in practice: it would be like casting pearls before swine. I would very much like to see «• Coxswain " or any other one of the Regatta Committee jump into a four-oared boat and pull a race without any previous practice.— l am, &c, Nelson, Dec. 9, 1875.
