The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY. DECEMBER 6, 1875.

The Taupo has been subsidised to carry fche San Franciaco mail, and may be expected here to-morrow. Mr. Sharp will address the electors at the Provincial Hall to-iiight at eight o'clock. The montlily competition by the members of the Nelson City Rifles for Lieutenant Godfrey's medal took place afc fche Maitai range this morning, when ifc was won by Corporal Burns with a score of 45. The annual sports will take place on the College grounds on Saturday afternoon next, when the Artillery Band will be in attendance. The various events are likely to be keenly contested. In the General Government Gazette of the 2nd instant it is notified that the services of the Nelson Naval Volunteer Cadets (Bishop's School) have been accepted, and that his Excellency has approved the alteration in the designation ofthe Waimea Cavalry Volunteers to the Normanby Hussar Volunteers. The^ Press Agency, ifc appears, does not enjoy a monopoly in the circulation of news, as the Auckland special correspondent of the Evening Post on Friday last telegraphed the following interesting item to that journal :— " A milk cart capsized upon three children, but they were n-o*. seriously injured." A sailor afc Auckland on Thursday last jumped overboard three times to swim to the land. He was twice taken back, bufc ultimately got ashore. The Wellington Post of Friday last, in calling attention to a meeting of the Star Boating Club, says : — The chief business will be the arranging of boats and men for the Nelson regatta, to be held on Boxing Day, -and as ifc is understood that the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company will lay on an excursion steamer for that event, boating men will nofc only have a good opportunity of competing for the liberal prizes offered at Nelson, but a most enjoyable journey to that land of sun and fruit will also be afforded those who prefer such a change to remaining in the Empire City. A Napier telegram of Friday says:— Sir D. M'Lean is expected here shortly. It is believed he will have a tight; rem for his seafc. Bets are freely made that he will not get in. To some of our readers in Nelson, which professes to be a place of some musical pretensions, the following extract from the Wellington Post may prove interesting :— " The Choral Society's rehearsal last evening was attended by 142 performers, who comprised about 40 each of soprano and bass voices, 16 contralto singers, 25 tenors, and about 20 instrumentalists, several of the band being unavoidably absent." The Herald makes a humorous reference to the change from bad to fine weather in the following terma : — The attendance at tbe Auckland open-air theatre is sensibly improving. The sun's starring engagement, though uncertain in its duration, draws crowds of spectators, indeed the great success of this gentleman is really astonishing. Perhaps the long abaence of a performer of his stamp from the Auckland stage somewhat influences the critics, bat certain it is that the Auckland public decidedly disapproved of tbe repeated production of such depressing pieces as « Wet Days, " Lend me an umbrella," and "Raising the wind." The change in the programme is a welcome one. On Saturday it is espected the popular farce of " Strawberries and Cream" will b. produced. The scene of this always attractive little piece is laid at Ellerslie. When the prodnotion of "Strawberries ard Cream" ia accompanied by ,c Sweethearts and Wives" it is always successful, and we throw out tho hint to the management. — ->-*m_- i „ „ ,_,—«,
