The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, DECEMBERS, 1875.
The election of a Mayor will shortly take place, and all candidates must be nominated before four o'clock on Monday, accordiug to the form prescribed in the election notice, which will be found in our advertising columns. We have not yet heard of any opposition to the present holder of the office, nor do we think that it is likely there will be, as the manner in which he has conducted the business of the Corporation has been such as to give general satisfaction. At Ufe .Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, Vere Bogle, who appeared to be perfectly palsied by drink, was fined in the uaual amount for being drunk and incapable. Lsr the sittings in bankruptcy yesterday afternoon Charles Bray passed his final examination, and received his discharge, the costs of the application to be paid out of the estate. — Richard Norris passed his final examination, and received his discharge. — In the matter of Hankins and Hill, the former did not appear, but the latter obtained his discharge. Aerial trip with the new carriages was raa^e on the railway yesterday afternoon>^ghen seven of them were run to Richmond and back. The passengers in them report that they travelled comfortably and smoothly, the only drawback being that, as might be expected where everything w&s new, the bearings once became a little heated. The carriages have been put together by Mr Leech. A crtcket match, commencing at half-past nine o'clock, wiil be played in Victory Square to-morrow between the Nelson rfnd Spring Grove Clubs. Being the first match of the season, it is probable that there will be*£ large number of spectators during the afternoon. The Nelson team will be as follows: — C. Cross, H. Cross, Powell, Halliday, Barnett, O'Connor, Coles, Ibbetson, Atkinson, and Burns. Mb Rout's address to the electors of the Suburbs appears elsewhere. He promises to hold meetings in the various districts shortly in order to more fully explain his views. As absurd error appeared in our report yesterday of the caae Hooper v Hogf?, the words " parallel agreement " being printed instead of "parole agreement." A dramatic entertainment is to be given shortly at the Oddfellows' Hall in aid of the fife and drum band recently formed in connection with the Artillery Cadets. It has been decided to repeat the " Daughter of the Regiment" as the principal piece, as it was so well received on the last occasion by those who were present, and is desired to be seen by many who were then unable to attend. The remainder of the entertainment will consist of a new farce and new music. The City Cadets advertise an entertainment about the same time, which is unfortunate but unavoidable, as some of those who are to take part in the performances are about to leave town for a time after the Christmas holidays. However, so far from any antagonism existing between them, they are doing all they can to help one another. Mr Frank Weston will give one of his amusing lectures at (he Masonic Hall to-night, when he may safely calculate upon having a crowded audience, as in addition to the novel character of his entertainment there are to ba found at the foot of his advertisement the magic worda " admission free." Some idea of the business dona by Mr Weslon in hia magic oil Ac , may be obtained from the following extract from the Sydney Town and Country Journal : — " Mr Weston is the Holloway of Australia —he advertises in every paper in this and moat of those _in the ether colonies, paying nearly £2500 a year for advertisements in them a'one. He keepg a clerk whoae duty alone it is to check the papers, and to see that his notices are inserted as agreed upon, and properly displayed. The ramifications of his business are so extensive as to astonish those be± coming aware of the extent of it for j the first time. In Melbourne he keeps twelve men constantly engaged packing the oil, show cards, and printed books and testimonials; and to show the vast number turned out it may be mentioned that on Messrs Elliott Bros, fust commencing their glass works at Pyrmont the first order they executed wns one for three hundred gross of Wizard Oil bottles, which were required, in addition to tfoosa imported and made in Melbourne." ..
