?^ amm __» . _____ __ _ The bankraptcy of Thomas Snanton "Woolf, mariner, of Marahau, is announced. Ma Charlea Bunny was elected captain of the Artillery Cadets last night, vice Captain Strong resigned. The Auxiliary Pice Brigade desire to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of a large number of periodicals, magazines, &c, from W. M. Stanton, Esq., for the library of the above brigade. The annual show under the auspices of the Nelson Agricultural Association will be held at Richmond to-morrow, when it is said that both exhibitors and visitors will be more numeroua than usual. Eor the convenience of those who purpose going from town, Messrs Twist and Gay will start a conveyance from their stables at 11 o'alock, The dramatic corps of the Nelson Artillery Company purpose giving an entertainment next week. The prin» cipal piece will be l( The Daughter of the Eegitnent," upon the preparation of which much time and trouble have been bestowed. The dresses and general get up of the piece will be of the best description, and a very pleasant evening may be looked forward to by the large number who are sure to attend. At the Eesident Magistrate's Court at Spring Grove yesterday there were several cases heard, among them being one in which Mrs Terry charged one Price, a married man, with an indecent assault, but the information was afterwards altered to one of common assault. It was proved that the defendant pulled the complainant on to his knee once or twice and kissed her, and he was fined 40s and costs. In two other cases judgment was reserved until Monday nest. The Butler Netos of October 21 says :— A traveller from the Kararaea informs us that Jamea Johnson, a child three years old, died there of consumption on Saturday, and was buried on Monday. This is the first death in the settlement. Several cases of measles have occurred. The first crushing of the Phcßnix Company, Wakatip (Otago), of forty tons of stone realised 223 ounces of gold. A man named Anthony Guffie was killed lately at Naseby, by a slip of ice and snow, whilst driving a tunnel through the snow at Clark diggings.. The temporary laying of the rails on the Greyraouth railway has now been completed as far as the b idge at Brunnerton, the terminus of the line, and ballasting and re-laying of the rails will at once be commenced. The Borough Council of Greymouth have passed a by-law prohibiting the driving of sheep through the streets of the town, for which they have been severely taken to task and ridiculed by the Argus. The result will probably be that the silly regulation will be rescinded. Is it possible ? Lately, in the Hesident Magistrate's Court, Oamaru, Jlr O'Meagher said he did not believe there was a town in New Zealand in which the women had more slanderous tongues. The Oriental Company, Lyell, are reported by the local paper to have finished crushing with a very satisfactory result. They crushed 29 tons of quartz, wfiich yielded a little o,ver 3 ounces to the ton.
