MESSES N. EDWARDS & COS WAREHOUSE.

Extensive additions hare of late been made to thia building, which is now by far the largest of the kind in Nelson. The new portion is 65 feet x 45 feet and 26 feet high, the upper floor being supported by strong pillars resting on Adele Island stone piles, and having a cement concrete foundation. The lower floor being laid with asphalte, can be used for the storage of heavy goods without any fear of their sustaining damage from damp arising from the earth. The upper storey is reached through the original buildiag, in the centre of which is a broad staircase leading to the piece goods room, from which a wide archway leads into the new drapery room, which is a splendid apartment 45 feet square and 12 feet high*, the roof being supported by varnished iron columns. It contains seven counters, each with an upper tier of shelves, the walls all round being lined with shelves, all of which are varnished with copal varnish, the tops of the counters being French polished. The ceiling is painted pale blue, and the room receives ample light by .day from sis windows, and by night from sixteen gas jets. The receiving and distributing room is 18 feet by 25 feet, fitted with a counter for packing and unpacking purposes, and it will be soon furnished with an hydraulic lift for raising the goods from below, the machinery of which is now in course of construction under the superintendence of Mr Brown of the Anchor Foundry. This will be capable of lifting packages of two tons weight. A door leads from this to the " marking room," 18 feet by 20 feet, which is well supplied with counters and shelving and clerks' desks. Here all goods will be marked and distributed through the various departments in this capacious warehouae. The whole of the timber used in the building is totara, rimu, kauri, and red pine. The work has been carried out by Mr Walter Good. ' .
