CITY COUNCIL.

Tha fortnightly meeting was held; last nightj all the members being present except Cr Pickering, who was prevented by a business engagement from attending. A long discussion regarding the recent running short of the gas supply took place, and the manager was blamed for not being near the works from five p.m. until eight or nine ,a.m. on the following day. A letter was read from one of the men denying that he had been drunk. Eventually the whole matter was referred to the Gas Committee. The manager of tht? gasworks reported that everything was now working smoothly. The Collingwood coal for the first hour and a half, he found, yielded gas very freety, bufc after that much less; the coke was of a very light quality, and the coal appeared to damage the furnace bars. During the past month 20 tons of Grey coal had yielded 162,176 cubic feet of gas, and 8 tons 14 cwt of Collingwood coal 66,850 feet. Cr Everett read the following estimates for the ensuing year, and suggested thafc ifc would be cheaper and better to have the carting done by tender than for the Corporation to have its own horses and carts: — EXPENDITOBB. £

Some discussion took place regarding the overdraft; of £922. The Mayor said that a few months ago ifc had been reduced to £500, bufc fche old Council had bequeathed ao many liabilities to them ihat it had become necessary to increase ifc again. The balance sheet was then adopted, and Cr Everett gave notice of motion for a special meeting next Friday, when he would move that the rate for fche ensuing year should be Is in the .pound. Permission was granted to Messrs Freeman Brothers to launch their barge this evening. The following Committees were then appointed. Public Works: Crs Webb, Hooper, and Carter.
