The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1875.

The Excelsior Troupe, who arrived from the West Coast in the Kennedy this morning, will give an entertainment at the Masonic Hall this evening. The programme of the performance will be found in our advertising columns. Me Eebr, the Hon. Treasurer of the Nelson Aid Society, desires to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of £1 from the Hev. T. Buddie in aid of the funds of the Society. The first half-yearly meeting of the Naval Brigade was held at the Port Fire Brigade Hall last evening. There was a good attendance of members, Captain Richardson in the chair. The accounts of the half-year, duly audited, were submitted and adopted, also the report, which stated that at the first parade, in the month of March, there were only 33 members on the roll, while at the present time they mustered 59 active, and 7 honorary members. A number of questions were put to the Chairman and answered satisfactorily, and after a vote of thanks had been passed to him, the meeting separated. The Nelson Amateur Gymnasts, whose athletic feats are always so well received in Nelson, will give a performance in the Lower Wakefield Schoolroom to-morrow evening. We would recommend residents in the neighborhood to pay them a visit. A Quadrille assembly will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall to-morrow evening, commencing at eight o'clock. At the Resident Magistrate's Court the only case of any interest was that of Thompson v. Rowe, in which the plaintiff claimed £20, the value of a horse alleged to have been illegally detained by defendant. In the course of the evidence it appeared that the horse in question had been sold to both parties by the same man, first to Thompson, and then to Eowe. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £io, or for the return of the horse and £3 damages. There appears to be a very general feeling of indignation abroad with regard to the reply given by the Minister of Public Works to Mr Luckie relative to the extension of the railway to 1 the Port. The Inland Communication Committee have been roused to action in the matter, and in addition to the meeting called by the Secretary for Mpnday next, a circular has been ad» dressed by the Mayor to a number of residents in this town, asking them to meet at the Council Chamber on Fridav evening. After quoting the telegrams which appeared in the local newspapers in reference to the railway, the circular proceeds to say:— « As extreme indignation has been expressed at the treatment which Nelson has received at the hands of the General Government in this matter, I beg to invite you to meet me at the City Council Chamber on Friday evening next, the 10th instant, at seven o'clock, in order that some steps may be taken, by public meeting or otherwise, to lay before the General Government a strong expression of the deep sense of injustice felt by this community at the action taken by the Government, and that our memjbers may be urged to use all legitimate means in their power to obtain that justice and consideration which are due to this province.— l am, &c, J. H. Levien, Mayor." The Wealth of Nations QuartzMining Company, Inangahua, scraped from the plates 400oza7dwt of amalgam forj the week ending Saturday, 4th inst. The G. R Argus says that twentyfive members of- the First Westland Rifles have agreed to go to Nelson for the purpose of attending the proposed Eajster encampment.
