The theatrical correspondent; of the Australasian writes : — Mr Cotterell is back from Western Australia, and Mr iJavies, the ventriloquist, is back from Adelaide. Mr Davies is making a suburban tour, and Mr Cotterell is probably going to join Mr Baviea in a tour to China, Japan, and other near of ours. They will do well together, for they are both humorists, both original, and both diligent students of nature. The careless manner in which Gorerntnent returns are sometimes made up is disgraceful (says the Wellington Post.) The report of the Marine Department affords a flagrant instance, especially the interesting tabulated statements in relation to the Naval Training School and its 39 pupils. These occupy several pages, and the most important and interesting ifcem ia given with a neglect of detail which deserves the severest censure. The item we allude to is in Table M— List of Donations to the School— Hon W. H. Reynolds, buns and apples! This ie all the information vouchsafed in this State paper on this important matter, We are not told whether they were bath buns or currant buns, whether the apples were pippins or codlins, whefchei they agreed or disagreed with the boys or whether they did or did not gel gingerbeer or tea to wash them down i We trust some member of Parliament will immediately move for a returr i giving full supplementary details as tt this most interesting matter. Measles are very prevalent in Picfcon, Both old and young are attacked, and our informant says nearly every house has some inmate laid up. — Mar thorough Express. Mdlle. lima de Murska appears tc be creating quite a furore in Melbourne ! The musical correspondent of the Argus says : — I have never witnessed in any concert room in Melbourne, noi indeed for that matter in any other place, such enthusiasm of applause amongst an audience as has been evoked by the recent performances oi the gifted lima de Murska. And that it should be so is most honorable to every one concerned. In the light of ifc fche singer is seen in her propei position— in the place she was destined by nature to adorn : to put aside for a while by the charm of her arfc the influence of grovelling cares and sordid ambitions, to brighten the hours of leisure, to exalt the mind and gratify fche innate longing for fche beautiful fchafc lives in every man. The audience, too, by their manner assert this much, fchafc ifcheir perceptions are jusfc, their minds informed by the culture of experience, and their hearts warm enough to fling away fche trammels of conventional restraint when touched to admiration by the power she wields so easily. If ever we are to see her in opera, these demonstrations will surely be intensified, for, amongst a mass of people thickly packed, enthusiasm becomes contagious, and the most timid and reticent will add their cheers to swell a general shoufc of triumph when fchey know they will not be pointed afc as singular. The eastern press must have a sensation. So long as fche Tilfcon-Beecher trial lasted fchere was one inexhaustible subject; to write aboufc, bufc thafc has closed, and now it has another hobby, fruitful of matter, on which the changes are being rung in the highest style of journalistic arfc. Ifc was fche Sun thafc sefc fche ball in motion, and the refrain is heard all over the country. Ifc was an invifcafcion extended to (Jueen Victoria to attend the Centennial. Here is the style in which ifc puts the case : " The arrival hither of this royal lady would make the cords thafc bind the two nations not merely an electric wire, across which commerce sends its messages of mutual interest, but a 'living bond, palpitating with blood 1 resh from the heart of the American >eople." " Spirits may be summoned rom the vasty deep," but the question s, will they come ?
