The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 3, 1875.
Ma Kerb, the hon. treasurer of the Nelson Aid Society, desires to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of half a guinea from Rev Mr Leighton, and £1 Is from E. Batfcersbee, Esq., in aid of the funds of the Society. The City Volunteers, headed by the Artillery Band, marched out by Collingwood and Nile-streets last night, round by the back of the Church Hill, and to the College, thence down by the Hospital to Toi-Toi Valley and home. The march out was well attended and orderly. The following is the present strength of the volunteers in Nelson Province:— Cavalry 37 ; Artillery, 69 ; City Eiffes, 47; Stoke Rifles, 50; Naval Brigade, 59; Artillery Cadets, 49 j City Cadets, 44; Stoke Cadets, 17; College Cadets, 50; Staff, 3. Total, 425. The Sisters Duvalli gave the second of their entertainments to a very fair house last night, and were frequently applauded, especially in the dancing and acting. They will appear again to-night in the amusing burlesque entitled " The Demon Lover," and the entertainment will close with the laughable farce " The Jealous Husband." A robbery from Mr M'Conkey's Hotel was reported at the Police Station this morning. It appears that at three o'clock yesterday afternoon Mrs M'Conkey took^ out the cash box from a drawer in which it was always kept locked, for the purpose of changing a £5 note, and put it into the back parlor. At five p.m. she went to it again, and put three £1 notes in it. At midnight the box, which contained £114, was missing, and information was given to the police. To the room from which the box was taken, no one, we are informed by the police, had access except the members of the family and a lodger. The time is approaching when the members of the Fire Brigade usually hold their annual dinner, but we understand that on this occasion they will have to forego the customary convivial meeting on accouat of want of funds. This should not be in a town like Nelson, the inhabitants of which are so largely indebted to the Brigades for the immunity they have enjoyed from serious fires. A paltry case was heard in the Hesident Magistrate's Court this morning, when one Smith sued W. Orstnan for 13s 4d, the balance of wages alleged by the plaintiff to be owing to him. From the defendant's statement it appeared that out of chanty to the plaintiff he had provided him with board and lodging, and on his going away had given him £2, no agreement whatever having been made between them for wages. The plaintiff then said that there was 13s 4d more owing to him, and on Orsman refusing to pay him he took out a summons. The Resident Magistrate, who said the action ought never to have been brought, nonsuited the plaintiff with £i 10s costs. Immediate execution was applied for, and issued/and this will swell the costs by a further sum of 9a.
