WAIMEA ROAD BOARD ELECTIONS.
Waimea East.— At the election yesterday for one member of the Waimea Road Board for the sub-district of Waimea East, the candidates were Mr Barnicoat, the retiring member, and Mr N. Fowler. When the poll closed at 530 the numbers were— Mr Barnicoat, 16; Mr Fowler, 13. The /ormer was declared f-lected. Wakefield . — Tho ratepayers of tbis district met, at the Upper Wakefield Institute yesterday to elect a member of the Waimea Boad Board for their diatrict. Mr William Cole j was voted to the chair, aud called on ! those preseot to nominate some person I or persons to fill the vacancy caused by I the retirement of Mr H. J. Tunnicliflv, I hut who waa eligible for re-election. j Mr H. Wadsworib proposed, and Mr Harry Batt seconded. Mr H. J. Tonuidiffe ; Mr W. A. Morrison proposed, and Mr C. Gaukrodger seconded, Mr George Holland. No other candidate being proposed, the chairman called for a show of hands, whioh was aa follows: —Mr Tunnicliffe, 7; Mr Holland, 3, The latter demanded a poll, which at, its cclop,s p , resulted as follows : — Mr Tunnicliffe. 36; Mr Holland, 16. Mr Tunnicliffe waa declared duly elected. A great deal of interest wbb taken in the election, and traps were driving throughout the afternoon m all directions for voters. Waimea West.-— About lwenty-five ratepayers were present. Mr E. H. Ford was elected chairman. Mr E. Andrew proposed Mr William Bell bb a person in every way qualified to represent them at the Board, and knew that if elected he would do his duty — Mr James Arnold had much pleasure in seconding Mr Bell, as he had known bira for many years,, and he had always taken an ioterest in the affairs of the district — -Mr James LiviDgston enquired, if Mr Bel! was elected, would he convene a meeting of ratepayers now and again, gay every eijc months, in order to inform them what works were done or likely fo be undertaken io the district. He did bo because at the present time they had no opportunity of discussing matters with their representative from one election to another, namely, every two years. — Mr Bell considered it a wise step, and would meet them whenever c* led upor, — Mr Mercer wanted to k«iow il he would give his attention towards the gorae nuisance, aa it was rendering several of thoir roada impassable. — Mr Arnold considered it was the duty of occupiers of adjoining lands to clear the gorse from off the road, as he had been compelled to do. He called upon the Overseer of the Board, as their late member was not present, to state what Bction tbe Board was takiug in the matter. — The Overseer said that the question had several times been brought before thera but nothing definite had beea decided upon. — As no one else was proposed Mr Bell was declared duly elected. — Mr BeU thanked the ratepayers for tbe honor tbey had done him, ho wouid nofc make thera promises which he knew wera not itksly to be performed, snd which seemed the usual custom on these oe^saions, but thia much he would say, tjjat he voq.d not consider private interests, hyt dg all in his power to promote cho welfare of the whole diatrict.-*>A vote of fngofc* to Chairmun terminated the proceedings.
