The Nelson EVening Mail. THURSDAY, JULY 1, 1875.

The price of gas is to be raised today from 12s 6d to 14s 2d, a fact that' will be practically impressed upon consumers when the meters are taken at the end of the mouth. The pilot boat and crew had a very narrow escape last night. They had taken Mr Lowe out to bring the Phcebe in, and waited outside to bring back Mr Cross, who was taking the Albion ont. Mr Cross waa just jumping into the boat when the steamer went ahead, and the boat got under her stern, and, owing to the heavy! sea that was running, I could not get away before the steamer, which was pitching heavily, came right down upon her, and she narrowly escaped being cut in two by the screw. What with the alarm occasioned by tbis narrow escape and the dangerous state of the bar for an insufficiently manned boat, the crew refused to go out again with the Phosbe, and the consequence was that Mr Lowe had to proceed to Auckland in her. The crew complain bitterly of their being shorthanded, and tbe Harbormaster, we understand, has represented the matter to the Provincial Government. As it is, in order that the salary of one man may be saved, the lives of those who form the little crew are placed in jeopardy. Mr Cross, we belieVe, is quite of opinion that at least one more hand should be employed, and be is surely in a better position to know the requirements of his department than the Provincial Government. We hope to hear that his request has been complied with without any unnecessary delay. A Bazaar in connection with the Presbyterian Church in Nelson, is to be held on Thursday and Friday next week, the receipts of which will be devoted towards a fund that is bein» raised for the erection of a new church, the present one being in a very dilapidated condition. The articles offered for sale will be of excellent quality, and the prices reasonable. The members of the. Presbyterian Church in Nelson have always been most ready to assist other denominations, -and as this is the first occasion on which they have appealed to the public for aid, we trust and believe that they will meet with a liberal and general response. All who attend the bazaar may do so with the certainty of receiving the full value of the money they expend, whether at the entrance door or at the stalls. At a meeting of the Howard Lodge of OJd.eliows held last night the following officers were elected j — V.G., i Bro. Kisseil ; E.S., Bro. J. Leitch. The N.G. will be elected next lodge night, when P.P.G.M. Wigzell will be the only caodidate, P.P.G.M. .Wigzell, P.G. Jones, and P.N,G. E. Adams were elected auditors. At the fortnightly meeting of Foresters the following officers were elected for the ensuing half year :— C.R., Bro H. T. Hall; S.C.R., Bro. Poole; E.S., Bro. W. Foote; 5.8., Bro. Avery; J. 8., Bro. A. Davis; 5.W7, Bro. Douglass; J.W., Bro. M'Keosie. Fourteen years ago to-day, (says the Inangahua Times of 22nd June), Eeuben Waite lauded at the Buller, now known as Westport, and founded the West Coast goldflelds. He landed iv Nelson with the first parcel of Buller gold oa. July 15th following. Another scene (telegraphs the Dunedin correspondent of the Post) occurred in the R.M. Court this morning. Mr Bathgate called Mr Denniston, defendant's counsel, to order for shrugging his shoulders. A slight word sparring camp P f. j3f}or% after Mr Bathgate told Mr Bennisfc'on |t yip ij %tyv§\ fov young counsel" to be over palpus'. Mr Denniston very naturally objected to the term "youug counsel," as he is between thirty and forty years old.
