CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
[Thursday, June 3.] Present— The Bishop of Nelson, Revs. T. Buddie and A. M. Garin, Messrs Barnicoafc, Broad, Jackson, Campbell, Bout, Shephard, Beuke, Tarrant, Mercer, Goulstone, Talbot; Holder , Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Rout, That an allowance of £5 be made to the Suburban North CBmmittee; this sum to be deducted from nest year's Committee allowance. A letter was read from the teacher of Motupipi school, protesting against the re-opening of the Clifton school on the alternate day , system., Further, consideration "of this matter was deferred until the Secretary could communicate with the Motupipi Committee, and ascertain, by visiting the district, how the educational interests of Motupipi would be affected by the proposed change. Eesolved, on the motion of Mr Broad, That a subsidy be granted, on the usual terms, to a second school at Eeefton, lately opened by the Eev. M. L. Cummins. Eesolved, on the motion of the Bishop of Nelson, That Mr A. Brown's request that he might no longer be compelled to employ an assistant at Eeefton (the number of scholars attending his school having fallen off) be acceded to. Mr Broad informed the Board that the report of the Committee appointed to draw up regulations for subsidised schools would be brought up at the next meeting. Mr Mercer having proposed that the salary of the assistant at Waimea "West Village be increased from £24 to £36, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Goulstone, That any proposition for raising the salary of a teacher be referred to the Finance Committee to be appointed at next meeting. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Broad, That the Board of Examiners for special certificates be increased to six, and that the Bishop of Nelson and the Eev. T. Buddie be added to the present member. A letter having been received from the Minister of Public Works, offering £150 to the Board as {compensation for the removal of the school buildings at Brunnerton, it was resolved, on the motion of .Mr ouepharl, That this offer hp:.. A letter was read fron Mr Metcalfe, late teacher of the school at the Lyeil, informing the Board that he had given up the school, which wcs being carried on by Mr Goldstucker. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Rout, That the Secretary obtain further information on the subject from Dr Giles, and from the Chairman of the Lyell School Com? mittee." A letter was read from Mr Delany, informing the Board that he had engaged Miss Gillespie as assistant at St. Patrick's School, Charleston. Eesolved, on. the motion of Mr Jackson, That the request contained in a letter irom the Eev T. Flavell be complied with, and that the usual subsidy be continued to the school at No Town, lately opened by Mr Haswell. A letter was read from Mr Moore, informing the Board that he had given up his school at Blackett-street, Charleston. Mr Shephard having proposed that a cheque for £7 be drawn in favor of the Pangatotara Committee, £5 of which was to defray the cost of works executed, and the remaining £2 to be deducted from next year's Committee allowance, Mr Eout proposed as an amendment, that £5 only be allowed, to be deducted from next year's grant for contingencies. The original proposition was carried, on a division. Ayes, 7 — Messrs Holder, Beuke, Cresswell, Tarrant, Garin, Campbell, Shephard. Noes, 6 — Messrs Eout, Jackson, Mercer, Goulstone, Buddie, Talbot. Eesolved, on the motion of Mr Mercer, That permission be given to the inhabitants of Appleby to erect a library room on the school reserve, upon a site to be approved of by the Inspector. Eesolved, on the motion of Mr Goul stone, That a cheque for £18 15s be drawn in favor of Mr T. Campbell, as a remuneration for his services in teaching at Haven Eoad School, during, the illness of the master. Eesolved, on the motion of Mr Eout, That the Secretary ascertain whether a suitable site can be obtained for school buildings at Brunnerton, and if so, upon what terms. The following notices of motion were given: — 1. By Mr Goulstone, That, with regard to a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Board, raising Mr Sadd's salary in an undesirable manner, inasmuch as his application did not come through his LocaTComraittee, the said resolution be rescinded, and Mr Sadd be requested to refer to the Local Committee. 2. By Mr Tarrant, That the salary of the assistant at Lower M outere be increased from £24 to £36. The Bank overdraft on June 3rd was £1314 17s Id.
