The Albion arrived at Hokitika last night end was tendered, this morning. Her telegrams will be found elsewhere. The bars on the western coast of the colony appear to have been in & bad state, as will be seen by our shipping column, in which several steamers are reported as having been delayed. 1.0.G T.—The Loyal Nelson Lodge, No. 31, will hold a special meeting tomorrow evening, when the election of officers will take place, and other business be transacted. Wakefield Cricket Club. —The closing match of the season will be played on the Wakefield ground on Saturday next. There will be a lunch provided on tbe ground, and we are requested to say that the members of tbe Club will be glad to welcome their cricketing friends from all parts. Baker's Hibernicon. — The Oddfellows' Hall was filled to overflowing last night with an audience, every member of which appeared to be delighted with the beautiful panorama that was exhibited- comprising on the whole between sixty and seventy exceedingly well painted views of the Emerald Isle. These were accompanied by a short lecture by Mr Harry Baker, who in a few words gave a brief description of each scene as it was presented. Every now. and then (here was a pleasing variation by Mr Verner whose Irish drolleries caused the Hall to ring again with the laughter of the amused audience. For comicalities of this description Mr Verner beats anyone we have heard in Nelson, and his performances and witticisms possess the great recommendation of being entirely free from anything approaching vulgarity. Miss Lilly O'Laugblin who appears with him is a pretty little dancer, and was frequently encored. The singing of the Messrs Baker was loudly applauded, and Mr Cullimore's piano playing was much admired. On the whole the entertainment is an instructive and an amußing one, while there can be no doubt of its popularity. Death ov an oid Settler. — Yesterday afternoon there passed away from our midst oru more of the rapidly decreasing number of the original Nelson settlers. Mr Samuel Strong, who bad arrived at the good old age of 80, had up to the last few days been hale and hearty, but he was attacked by bronchitis, before which he succumbed yesterday. He had in his day | done a deal of good iv the settlement, and bad rendered valuable assistance to many who, without his aid, would have found a difficulty in successfully combatting tbe hardships of the early days. Mr Strong was a trustee of tho Nelson Savings Bank, in which institution he took an active interest, and until last Saturday had never since its foundation missed attending on the business nights. He will be buried to-morrow afternoon at tbe cemetery of the Society of Friends, of which body he was a member. There are 200 inmates of the Dunedin Lunatic Asylum. The Mny has sailed for Hongkong after shipping a large quantity of scrap iron and fungus at Wellington as cargo. It is reported that 800 men are at present employed on the railway and other public works in the Dunedin district. Two large waterspouts passed along to tbe south of the b&rbor of New Plymouth on the morning of the 22nd ultimo. The provincial analyst at Auckland has reported that eight samples of milk examined were found to be adulterated with water. Prosecutions are to be instituted. Two hundred and seventy tons of oysters were taken from tbe Australian pearling grounds by Malay divers last season, the value amounting to about £44,200. A number of pearls rewarded the adventurers, but there was only one of tolerable size aud of good color in the whole lot. The friends of Miss Alice May and Mr Allen will be interested in learning that they have commenced a most successful season of opera at Adelaidehaving with them Mr Armes Beaumont and a young lady of considerable promise as a vocalist, in addition to the company going through New Zealand.
