The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, APRIL 17, 1875.

The Chables Edward. — We have been requested to state tbat in consequence of tbe threatening weather the departure of the p.s. Charles Edward for West Coast portß has been postponed until to-morrow (Sunday), at 2 p.m. Waimea Cavalry Corps.— -Owing to the inclemency of the weather, the meeting of intending members is postponed for a week.

Gra,pe Egkbton.— After an absence - of \ nine years ■ Gjrace Egerton (Mrs George Case) is about to revisit Nelb6d, where she and Mr. Case will give four entertainments, commencing on Tuesday evening next. This lady was . a great favorite when sho waa last here, and will probably be heartily welcomed on her return. It is reported that the Provincial Government have dispensed with the services of Mr R.. Hyland as general manager at tbe Karamea settlement. Charity SE_.MON.--We are authorised to state that should the steamer Tararua arrive in time, the Rev. Chas. Clark will deliver a Sunday evening lecture, in the Provincial Hall, at eight o'clock p.m. to-morrow. At the close of the lecture a collection will be made for the benefit of the families of the sufferers by the late accidents. Nelson Regatta. — Last evening the final meeting of the season of the committee was held at the Globe Hotel, for passing tbe accounts and other business, and it appeared that a balance of £14 ls 10J remains to the credit of tbe Club. This is to be placed in the National Bank as a nucleus for the next Regatta fund. We congratulate the late committee upon having carried out their programme with so satisfactory a result. The Rev. Charles Clark and Miss Christian will give a single entertainment in Nelson on Monday evening in the Provincial Hall. Mr Clark is already known in Nelson, and is sure to draw a large audience, which should be increased by the attractions of Miss Christian, whose singing has delighted her hearers in all parts of the Australian colonies. Cadet Firing. — The following is tbe result of the second competition for the Cadet champion belt aod silver medal : — Cadet Frearson (Thames), 77, belt, medal, and £8 ; Cadet Currie (Waiuku), 74, £5 ; Sergeant Aamodt (Wanganui), 72, £3. Cadet Shone, who made the top score in Nelson, is thirteenth on tho liet. Masonic Hall — Messrs Jacobs aud Airec gave another capital entertainment last night, Mr Jacobs performing his sleight of band tricks very cleverly, while Airec astonished his audience by his " feats in the air." They will appear for the last time this evening. Nelson Fire Brigade. —At the monthly meeting of the' Brigade last night the balance sheet was read, showing a deficij of £2 13s 6d. The Port Brigade applied for a grant of £24 68 8d to pay for their helmets, which it was resolved should be paid as soon as tha Brigade was in funds. Messrs Darby and Parmenter then attended and paid in the sum of £80 4a 6d, which they had collected for the Brigade. This was thankfully acoepted, and tho two gentlemen who had taken so much trouble were elected honorary members in consideration of their services. Mf W. Astle was elected a member. It waß resolved to subscribe £10 out of the'private Members' Fund j it o,n._p-i-i.o f.-.tii-^w-^tre— fwrntrrea 6T~ Downes, Kelly, and Williams. ■ Cricket. — The Weßtland Cricket Club are Bending up an eleven by tbe Murray, which will arrive here on Tuesday, tjo play the Nelson Province. We have not heard of any steps being taken tb get up a team lo meet them, but thia is probably owing to a misunderstanding with regard to the time, that at first fixed being the second week in this month, and as the season ia over in Nelson - there has been no practice ot late. However, it will never do to let our visitors gp away without a gome, so it is to be hoped the necessary arrangements will be made a once. But it is not only the players who are concerned, but the public generally, and we trust that they will come forward with some pecuniary assistance towards meeting the expenses of entertaining our guests. Hitherto tbis has been a heavy drain upon the purses of the eleven engaged in the game, who have had to bear the whole cost of showing hospitality to the teams from elsewhere, while the province gets the credit of it. A very small contribution from each of those who take an interest in the game would be sufficient for tbe purpose, and, if invited to do so, we cannot doubt that they would respond to the call. There have been a multiplicity of disasters on the sea lately (says the " Loafer in the Street.") Such things are not laughable when you come to join in to the business, but if don't give you something in the shape of a wreck this week you'll get thinking I'm behind the time. If you'd only employ me oftener I could produce aa mnuy noveltipß fov your admirable journal as anyone in New Zealand. A man I know in the North Island went boating lately with some Maoris. There was another white man in the boat, and when it came on to blow which it subsequently did, and the big waves cpme rolling over the boat, tbe white man last spoken of, who was a carpenter, began hitting out on the weeps. His lamentations were sad and loud to hear. On being rebuked for his want of manliness, he said, " you don't feel as I do. I built this boat. It was a contract job, and I only kno.ked her together for these poor heathens with two-inch nails. So sure as we scrape on a reef of any kind she'll break right up like punk." The boat got safe in, and now tbat contractor trots round blowing about the sea-going qualities of his boats, and keeps on building them for the heathen Maoris with inch and a half nails, but he don't go out in them himself. He seems to have acquired a distaste for aquatics. (
