THE TOWN CLERKSHIP.

[A correspondent has favored us with a letter on this subject, from which we make the fo lowing extract, his other suggestions Having been anticipated by the Council at their metting on Monday night:] — " In reference to the position of the Town Clerk, I think the time has arrived when such an officer should be something beyond a passive instrument in the Council. Attending to the arrangement of the business of the latter, obtaining knowledge of the requirements of the sanitary department, &c, systematis'ng, in fact, the wliole machinery of the office, and then laying the matters in proper form before the Mayor and Council to deliberate upon, are portions .of the duties that should attend the position, coupled with a comprehensive knowledge of the Act, in order to be a ready prompter and reference in any case of questions touching its provisions. There is little doubt that the prosperity of any town depends to a very large extent upon the energy and enterprise of its Municipal machinery, and I hold that the, Town Clerk, if he be fitted by commercial experience and other qualifications for the office, cannot, and should not, be an inconsiderable member of the Corporate body. I trust theae remarks may receive from the Mayor and Councillors due attention, as there will probably be among the candidates those who are eminently qualified to fill the office with credit to themselves and the city."
