At tbe Police Court to-day, John Joiks, a respei table looking man, recently from South by the Ladybird, was charged with obtaining goods under false pretences at NeUon Inspector Thomson appealed for prosecutor and Mr Joy for the defence. On his applicution the case was reman Jed until Tuei d*y The accused was admitted to bail, himse £ in £100 and two sureties of £50 each. A numerously Bigned requisition irom the leading citizena of Port Chalmers has been presented to his WorsLip the Mayor asking him to convene a public meeting to take measures for the establishment of a local hospital, a step rendered necessary by the number of terious accidents in connection with the public worts which are of daily occurrence. The Luna arrived at Whskntano on 6th March, taking Sir Donald M'Lean, Colonel St. John, Under-Secretary Clark, Times' special reporter, and chiefs of the Ngaiterangi tribe. They found there representatives of ev<ry section of the Ngafawa, inhabiting the Bay of Plenty from Cape Runaway to Kati K-wi, including the Uriweras from the interior. Total present, 700. The Whakatane natives had convened the meeting to witness the opening of a newly carved house called Matawa, after the name of the canoe which brought their ancestors from Hawaii. Monday was devoted to the ceremony of publicly opening ihe house, after which complimentary speeches were nrtde to the Native Minister by each tribe, the whole winding up with dances Tuesday was occupied by business. The first interview was with Uriwera, who asked for a modification of the confiscated boundary. The Native Minister refused to concede a point, and by argument demonstrated ihe justice to whioh they unconditionally agreed. The next discussion was the reacquisition by Europeans ot lands within thtir territory, which was also satisfactorily sett'ed. The remainder of the day wds occupied in meetiug separately those ot the other tribes who earn brought forward individual grievances. Taking altogt ther the quiet and orderly behavior, it; was the most satisfactory meeting ever, held in. the Bay of Plenty. Sir Donald leaves for Maketu to-morrow. Wellington, Wednesday The presentation of the address to Mr. Fox took place in the Home ot Representatives to*day, and there were present Messrs Rtynolds. Eichardfon, Crefehton, Tribe, P^arce, and Hunter The Hon. Mr. Reynolds presented the address, and wished Mr and Mrp. Fox a pleasant voyage, and hoped Mr Fox would toon return to occupy his prorer position in the public affairs of thiß colony. Mr Fox, in returning tha.uks, said he would value the address more than he would a p^eeentatation of a service of either Bilver or gold. ]t was the counterfeit (?) presentment to those with whom he had been associated in rolitical actions, and he should cheiish it as an appreciation of his services by those who had voted with l.im at a time when tha public mind was agitated, and a political strupglo was going on. At his age it was extremely problematical whether or not he should ret"m to public life, but he looked upon colonisation as the greatest wcrk he hai ever engaged in. Whether in or out of the Colony he should do his best to futber the interests of New Zealand. He did not think his absence from the Colony would extend beyond eighteen or twenty months. *. i T Thursday. The Hon Mr aid Mrs Fox leave for Auckland to-day. Mr and Mrs Fox, Colonel Moulc, Mrj Mou'e, Misß Biggirson, Messrs Bell, Martin, Chatfleld, Fox, Kearnes, Fitzgerald, and fifteen in steerage. A Ja-ge number of people were oa the wharf, seeing Mr and Mrs Fox off.
