The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1875.
Sanitary Conditio\x)f thr Town. — From tho neighbourhocWof Waimeastreet, where the cases oNiever that have given rise to so much ararrn have occurred, we hear bitter complaints of other stenches than those arising either from the sewer or the swamp. It is not necessary that w> 6hould here enter into the details of so unsavory a subject, but we ahull be happy to impart ihe information we have received to the authorities, whose duty it certainly is to institute an inquiry, and to see that the source of the evil is removed. Water Supply — We are requested to warn residents in the town against too free a use of the water for the next two or three days, as the dam is being repaired, in consequence of which there must be a large escape of water. Good Templars. — A special meeting of the members of the Loyal Nelson Lodge will be held this evening, at half-past eeven o'clock, in the Temperance Hall, when the Hon. S. D. Hastings, P.R.W.G.T., will -preside, and initiate any candidates who may} apply for admission. The members of] sister lodges are invited to attend. < Nelson Gas. — -We had occasion o| few days ago to make complaint with* regard to the quantity of gas available. That evil has been remedied, but now we have to grumble at the quality. Compared with the stench that pervades a &as burning house at night, the mnma sent forth by a pigsty ibat had not been cleaned out for a fortnight would be delicately delicious. It is to be hoped that this stute of things is uot to last. Nelson Regatta. — At a meeting of the Committee held last night, it was decided to alter the " Professional Whaleboat Race " to " Championship Whaleboat Race," open to all comere, and the "Mercantile R*ce" to "Volunteer Companies' Race." The prizes for the "Coasters' Race" will be £8 : and £4; for ships' hoats £5 and £2. To subscribers of lOs, if paid before Tuesday next, tickets admitting to the wharf will be presented for themselves and families; to subscribers of ss, single tickets upon the same condition. Registration op Deaths. — We are requested to call the attention of those whom it may concern to the following; clause in the instructions in relation to' interments, recently forwarded by the Registrar-General to officiating minis ters: — "II is desirable, to insure a more perfect registration of deaths, that all ministers should refuse to bury dead bodies unless evidence of the registration is first produced, except in extreme cases, where such prior registration is from the circumstances of the case impossible. The adoption of that syslem would . relieve miniecers from much trouble and responsibility, ami also cause the Registration Act to be more fully carried out." It will be. observed that except in extreme cases, which in settled districts will hardly ever occur, ministers are instructed to refuse to bury unless the certificate of registration of death be first produced. What constitutes an amateur rower, is a question often discussed'by rowing men in the coionies. The Sydney Anniversary Regatta Committee lately decided to consider all persons amateurs who have not entered into an open competition either for v stake, public or admission money, or entrance fees, or competed with or against a professional for any prize, or who have never taught, pursued, or
assisted in the pursuit, of athletic exerciees ns a means of livelihood, or tins not been employed in or about boats, or in manual labour on the water. The Resident Magistrate at Aucklaud during the hearing of a recent case said that he believed that morality among the lower orders of Auckland was worse than in any other part of Neve Zealand. There are now alvertised for sale in the province of Otago, two sheep runs the property of otic firm. These are — Benmore, 261,560 acres and 87,000 sheep; and Galloway, 186,000 acreß and 105,000 sheep. The two runs are equal in size to the counties of Berkshire, in England, which, at the last, census, had a population of 196,475 souls. The news which arrived by the last mail that au Austrian lieutenant had attracted great attention on the Continent by riding from Vienna to Paris, a distance of 680 miles, in 15 days ou one horse has suggested another race against time to a Melbourne amateur sculler, who offers to back himself for £200 to row 750 miles in 15 days, or 1000 miles in 21 daya.
