WAKEFIELD V. SPRING GROVE.
A cricket match look place at Wakefield on Satarday (Boxing Day) between the Spring Grove and Wakefield Clubs. The Wakefield captain having won tha toes determined to send the SpriDg Grove men to the wickets. At about 11 o'clock, Messrs Hyde and Fayen commenced the batting against the bowling of C. Knapp and S. Fowler, and from the commencement it was seen that tbe SpriDg Grove men were determined to keep up their wickets in preference to showing off anything in the way of great hits, as only one hit for 4 was made in this innings, which lasted for about two hoars*. When the last man wbb dis* posed of, 42 was put up as the total. Messrs K. Knapp and J. Tunnicliff now went in to represent Wakefield. When the first wioket went down 14 runs had been obtained; when tbe sixth wicket fell 40 was the score. AU good
luck seems now to have deserted them as the remaining four weut down for only 3 runs, thus beating their opponents by 1 run in the first innings. Things now looked bright for the Spring Grove, and they seemed determined to try and win. When the last wicket fell 54 was put up as the result of their second innings. Wakefield had now to make 53 to tie, and they seemed determined to show what they could do, as the first wicket only fell when 19 was scored, 2 and 3 for 24, 4 for 34, 5 for 53; S. Fowler the remaining man was now joined by Captain Sellon, the former adding one and the Captain putting one out to the fence for three, when game waß called by the scorers, the Wakefield men having won by 4 runs and 5 wickets to go down.
