Resident Magistrate's Coubt. — Bridget Berry, the mother of the lad who was yesterday sentenced to be imprisoned and whipped, waa thia morning charged with using threatening language to Mrs Wright, the complainant in yesterday's case. The charge having been proved, the Resident Magistrate ordered that the husband of the defendant be bound over on his wife's behalf to keep the peace' for three months in his own recognizance of £10. He also administered a lecture to defendant saying that she and her husband were a disgrace and a shame to the place. Tbeir children, although under twelve yearß of age, were already notorious as expert thieves, and it was an unquestionable fact that a criminal class was being brought by these disreputable people, wbo were doing more deadly mischief by training tbeir children in vice than any other persons dwelling in the town. St Mary's Orphanage.— As the time (December 29tb) for tbe grand drawing of prizes, in aid of St. Mary's Orphanage, is near at hand, we are requested to intimate to the supporters of this work of charity to procure tickets as soon as possible. Davis was recommended as D.P.G.W.C.T., and Tuesday was fixed a. the night, and Mr Campbell's school the place, of meeting. — At the juvenile lodge last evening, sixteen candidates were initiated. Nelson Regatta. — We are glad to find tbat an earnest endeavour is being made to revive tbis old and favorite spoit iv Nelson, for which purpose a meeting will be held at the Trafalgar Hotel to-morrow evening, when it is proposed to appoint a Committee, comprising a number of our leading pro- [ fessional and commercial men, several ol whom have promised to attend. It is hoped tbat ali intending subscribers will make a point of beiog present, and that every encouragement will be afforded by the public towards establishing upon a firm and permanent basis a sport that should never be allowed to die out iv a seaport town. It is true that Neleon ia somewhat unfortunately Bituated in this respect, consisting as it does of what may be almost called two towns, one at tbe port, and another a mile distant, but still there are, it is believed, a sufficient number of citizens who take a real interest io euch matters to ensure a thoroughly successful day's racing. It will he proposed, we are j informed, tbat to all wbo subscribe to ; the fund free admission will be granted to the wharf on the day of the regatta. We hope to be able to report a large j attendance at the meeting to-morrow I evening, 1 Sone curiosity is expressed in Wellington as tc what is likt-ly te be done i with the unfortuDato Lowry Bay i property now that Sir James Ferguason has departed. It will be remembered that c sum of, we think, £2000 was advouced for expenditure on this properly, His Excellency undertaking to p ;y interest on it while in the colony, and i!ie understanding was that on his departure the property should be cold if his succe3Bor objected to continue tbe arrangement. It is considered very unlikely that the Marquis of Normanby will do this. It is, however, considered veiy doubtful whether the interest on this advance has ever really been charged.
