THE KARAMEA.

iWettport Times, Dec. I.] Mr. Black, late of the steamer 100, and wbo has beeo prospecting in the Karamea district since June last, is now at the Mohikinui taking a spell, and waiting for a renewed aupply of provisions per steamer Wallace. He reports very favorably of the general prospects of the Karamea district, but he gives no very definite information as to the result of his exploration. He has been out alone, and the difficulties one man would experience in prospecting in the dense bush amid the severe weather so long prevailing can be well understood. He bae, however, perseveringly tested the banks of the river up as far as the second gorge, and found gold io' several places ; and as he will now be joiaed by a mate who is a gcod practical miner, he anticipates soon being able to report more definite results. He says the few miners on the beach are doing a very /air stroke, and that the crops io the cultivation clearings are looking well, although the heavy rain and hail have to a very great extent ruined the fruit crops for the season. Fruit treeß of all kinds grow amazingly wel! there, and in a few years the Karamea will be one of the bPBt peach producing districts in New Zealand. Other fruits of all kinds also thrive there, and the supply of vegetables is most prolific. Referring to the new settlers, Mr. Black holds Strongly to the opinion that they should be advi.ed to lose no time in clearing small patches of ground and getting garden seed, and potatoes planted to ensure a crop for use in the ensuing winter, without which they run the risk of very hard lines, especially when rough weather off the coast prevents steamers calling.
