Pbofessor Heywood announces that he will give a series of lessoDS in the noble art of self-defence, commencing on Monday evening nexf.

Citt Artillery. — The firing by the members of this company for the gold medal will (ake place at the Maitai Butts at 5 o'clock on Tuesday morning. Competitors must send in their names before Saturday evening.

California.^ Minstrels — There was a crowded house lest night on the occasion of the entertainment given by the membira of this company, assisted by Mrs Woodroffe, Mr Oakey, and Mr Maclaren. The singing throughout the evening was remarkably good, and Ihe playing of Mrß Woodroffe on the piano was greeted with loud applause. Mr Rockefeller's clever performances on the banjo were universally ndmired, and Mr Maclaren's comic songs were well appreciated. The whole entertainment passed off most satisfactorily.

Upper Buller. — At a public meeting held at Pern Flat, to consider the question of the expenditure of the £50,000 grant, the following resolutions were carried :— M That this meeting is of opinion that, as no public works of any importance can be undertaken out of the ordinary revenue, it is absolutely necessary that the works proposed to be constructed out of the borrowed money should be of immediate benefit, and the one public work calculated to iacrease tbe welfare of the Province is the construction of the road through the Upper Buller to tbe Inangahua." — " That, in tbe opinion of tbis meeting, the completion of the Upper Buller road ia more urgently required than the dray-road on the Lower Buller, there being excellent boat communication between Westport and the Inaogabua." — " That this meeting ia of opinion that, if inland communication waa reatly the object and aim of the Nelson Provincial Government, tbe state of the roads and the late scarcity of provisions should necessitate tbe immediate completion of the road between Nelson and Lyell." — " That, in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable that the road through tbe Hope Valley be proceeded with." The News says there is "an opening in Coromandel for a umart young lawyer who will attend to bis business " and leave dissipation to his clients."
