J. A. Froude, the eminent historian, is about to leave to leave England on a visit to all the English colonies all over the world. Mr Froude will begin with the Cape of Good Hope and he will end with Canada. Mr Froude's absence from England will extend over two years. " I have no doubt," says the London correspondent of the New Zealand Herald, " that you will welcome Mr Froude to New Zealand tre many months are over." During the week ending the 21st ultimo, the shipment of coal from the port of Newcastle amounted to not lees than 28,842 tons. Of that quantity, 8259 tons went to Sydney, 4447 to Melbourne, 1328 to South Australia, and not less than 2061 tons to New Zealand. New Caledonia was a customer to the extent of 466 tons; China for 1922, Manilla for 1200, and Sau Francisco for 5792 tons. These figures should, give confidence to the steam-coal miners at woik on the Grey River. Mr James Tanner, who does a little popular speaking at election times in Kendal, disposed of an uHra-Radical argument against royal dowries by reducing the question to "a pipe of tobacco." " They were going to give the Duke of Edinburgh £25,000 a- year. That seemed a large sum, but if they

reckoned it up they wouU find it cost exactly a pipe of tobacco per annum from every man that smokes in the three kingdoms. (Hear, hear, and laughter.) There was not a single man who agreed with him in the delightful habit of smoking, who, if he were to meet Prince Alfred on the road would not give him a pipe of tobacco. 1 ' (Laughter.)
