The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1874.
. Mr Mabin reports sales of National Bank shares at 695. A barque was signalled when we went to press. Inland Communication Committee. -—Members of the Committee are requested to meet at the Government Buildings at half-past seven this evenin *?-', * • The steamer 'Alhambra arrived at Hokitika this morning, and" as^she is to leave the Coast this evening, she
should be here by to-morrow afternoon's tide. We had received no telegrams up to the time of our going lo presa. Public Meeting.— lt is scarcely necessary to remind our readers of the important meeting to be held at the Provincial Hall this evening. It is expected that tlife Hall will be crowded, as great interest is felt in the matter. It may perhaps bo well that meetings should also be held in the country districts iv order that all may havo anVppportunity of protesting against theNhreatened action of the Government in re tho railway to the West Coast. Harmonic Society's Concert. — Tho Harmonic Society gave their quarterly concert last night, but we can ecarcely call it n success. Owing to tbe prevalence of colds and other causes there were many vacant seals on the platform, and it was perhaps on this account that Gounod's Mass which formed the first part of the programme fell so jflatly on the ears of the audience, but, t&kiug this concert io connection with previous ones of a similar character vre cannot but arrive at the conclusion that Mass music is not in accordance with the popular taste, and it will, perhaps, be well for for the Society if, for tho future, they accept (his as an unquestionable fact. The second part cousißted of miscellaneous selections, which formed a pleasing contrast to the solemn and uncheerful music of tho earlier portiou of the performance. The frequent encores were a sufficient proof that the •songs were sung to an appreciative audience. Nelson Bills. — There Beems to be no end to tbe dispiriting news that is constantly reaching us from Wellington. We learn now that our Harbor Loan Bill has been disallowed on the ground that it was to give tbe Superintendent power to borrow money. The Dalegated Powers Bill, which provided that the Superintendent should exercise the powers delegated to him under tbo Goldfielda Act with the advice and consent of the Executive only has been thrown out in the Upper House, The Gas and Waterworks Bill, we are informed, is likely to pass. The weather was co bad in Wellington that the Taranaki was not able to leave until yesterday afternoon, instead of on the previous day. Sue then only got as far as the Heads, from whence she was compelled to put back, as tha sea was too heavy to be faced. Ultimately she sailed early this morning, and left Picton for Nelson at 930 a.m. Lotalb Combination Troupe of Varieties will make their first appearance at the Masonic Hull to-morrow eveniDg. As the name of the company denotes, the entertainment is of a varied kind, but tbe great attraction is the feats of Mdle. Zuila on tho trapeze. They will perform for three nights only.
