Cheap Gas.— We take the following from the Medical Times and Gazette of May 16:— The Committee of visitors at the flaowell County Asylum are to be congratulated on the fact that they manufacture their own gas, by which they are able to produce gas at about half the cost that the London consumer is expected to pay. During last year j 8,077,560 cubic feet of gas was consumed in the establishment, at a total cost of £969 Os Id, or 2s 4|d per 1000 cubic feet. This sum includes every expense, such as wages, repair aud maintenance of works, &c, the interest on tho cupital originally spent oa'y being excepted. Surely if private manufacturers can produce gas on a small scale at a cost of less than 2s 6d per 1000 cubio feet, it cannot be necessary for the gaa companies to charge 4s 9d per 1000 cubic feet in order to gain a fair profit. Only Wants a Fair Show.— A wide-awake minister, who found his congregation going to sleep before he had commenced, suddenly stopped and exclaimed, " Brethren, this isn't fair; it isn't giving a man half a chance. Wait till I get along, aud then if I aiu't worth listening to, g0 to sleep, but don t before I commence. Give a man a chance." A Missouri woman won a house and garden in a raffle, and then she had to buy a rifle to keep her adorer* from wearing oat the steps.
