CORRESPONDENCE.

♦ * We are desirous of affording every reasonable facility for the discussion of public subjects; but it must be understood that we are in no way responsible ior tbe opinions expressed by correspondents. To the Editor oir the Evening Mail. Sic— Reading in last night's Evening Mail that a brilliant comet was now visible a little before sunrise, I got up this morning before I the lark in order to see the stranger. About five o'clock it made its appearance over the second knob of the mountain on the south side of the entrance to the Maitai Valley. The morning was not favorable for showing it to advantage, as there was considerable haze hanging over the mountains, and the full moon was shining very brightly, which rendered it impossible to clearly distinguish the tail propot tions. The nucleus is brilliant, and as it is as yet at a considerable distance from the sun, it nay, should the weather prove favorable, appear to greater advantage in a few days, but the moon will Jbe a great drawback. I noticed a small star to the north of the nucleus, but very near it, which I conjecture to be Canis Minor. If my conjeccure be right then the nucleus was passing directly over the beautiful star Procyon, and we must next look for it shining through the comet's tail. I am, /fee., xjgr tt Nelson, July 29, 1873.
