This Morning.
Mr Donne moved, That in the opinion of this Council the reconstruction of the bridge over the Nile River, Charleston, is a work of so much urgency and importance to the district and the province that its reconstructiob should be one of the earliest public works undertaken by the Government. - — The previous question was moved by the Provincial Secretary and carried. — Mr Donne moved, That tbe fluctuations incident to a Responsible form of Government render it highly probable that the chief Executive Department may be occupied from time to time by gentlemen unacquainted with, . or unskilled in official routine, necessitating the appointment of a permanent officer to whose experience and skill the details of the management of such departments could be prudently entrusted, and that in pursuance of this principle it is desirable that some person holding the office of Deputy-Secretery and Treasurer's Assistant should be appointed and form a part of the permanent staff of tbe province.—- Onk the motion of Mr Ivess the debate vwas adjourned until Thursday. -—On the motion of Mr Gibbs it was resolved, That his Honor the Superintendent^ be requested to make arrangements for the cdnstruction of the road from the scboolN house, Clifton, to Pubarjj prayed for in the petition of certain settlers of Motupipi, Golden Bay, under the provisions of clause '42 of '•' The Waste Lan'is Act, 1863." — On the motion of Mr Gibbs it was resolved, That his Honor the Superintendent beJ^quested to place the sum of £50 on the Supplementary Estimates, to meet equivaßJot subscriptions, for the purpose of erect\ ing public library building*. — Mr* Wastney moved, That his Honor the Superintendent be requested to place on the Appropriation Bill the sum of £700, to bo paid to the CetfflFaPßQard of Education, so fur as tbe actb^l receipts from the Education rates during, the current financial year may exceed the estimated receipts.— The Provincial Secretary moved that all the words after " Central Board of Education " be struck out, and the resolution thus amended was agreed to.— Oa the motion of Mr Taerant it was resolved, That in the opinion of this Council it is expedient a road should be constructed on the west bank of the Motueka River in the Pangatotara Road -. Board District, and, as the province will not admit of a sum of money being voted for that purpose, his Honor the Superintendent be requested to cause such road to be constructed under the provisions, of clause 42 of " The Waste Lands Act, 1863."— The Council then adjourned until five o'clock tbis even--
