CITY COUNCIL.

A'meeting of the City Council was hflld at the office, Haven Road, last evening. The Mnyor (J. R. Dodson, Eeq), occupied the chair, Crs Burns, Fell, Thompson, Burn, and Jennings being present. The minutes of the" previous meeting having been read and confirmed, a letter was rend from Mr Levien asking permission to erect a fence round land at the corner of Nile-street. Leave was granted on the usual conditions. A letter was received from Mr J. A. Havley, applying for the office of Town Clerk. The application was ordered to stand over with other applications. Tbe question of lighting the street lamps was spoken of. Cr Fell thought the Council might have the gas laid on now. He would not propose any motion to-night. The gas should be laid on as quickly as possible, but might perhaps be done by degrees. With regard to advertising and printing, tho Mayor thought it would be better that tenders should be invited for advertising and printing, in order to save tbe expense of advertising in two papers. Cr Fell proposed, and Cr R. Burn seconded, "That Mr Younger be appointed Town Clerk, pro tent." The proposition was carried. Mr Walts was appointed Collector for the Council; Mr Watkins, Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, was appointed Treasurer for the Council, and the Bank of New Zealand their bankers. In reply to his Worship, the Town Clerk said no answer had been received from the Superintendent relative to the application for the handing over of the Town Reserves, &c. The Councillors thought it was a want of courtesy in his Honor not to have answered this letter or acknowledged its receipt. The Town Clerk was requested to write again to the Superintendent asking the. favor of an early reply to the same. Cr. Fell moved that the Superintendent be requested forthwith to introduce a bill constituting the City Council for the time being a Harbor Board, with all powers granted to such Boards under the Act of 1870.
