The Nelson Eveening Mail. THURSDAY, MAY 28.

General Government Gazette — - Joseph Foord Wilson, Esq., has been appointed clerk of tbe Resident Magistrate's Court at Motueka, vice A. L. Campbell, resigned. Charles Lendrick Maclean haa been appointed Captain, and Daniel Burn Lieutenant in the Nelson City Rifles. Last Night's Council. — The Council went into Committee on the Executive Bill at six o'clock,; and was . engaged in discussing and amending it until after midnight. Notice was given of the third reading for this evening. On the Bill being passed the existing Executive will of course become defunct, and the Superintendent we presume, will at once send for some member of tbe Council to form a new Ministry. Bankruptcy.-— The bankruptcy of Francis Ferdinand Dakin and Walter Maunsell. Stace, pi the Kaikpura flax- i mills, and of James William Wills," of tho Lower Moutere, miller, is notified in' this morning's Gazette. . •; •" Nelson Variety Troupe: - — This amateur troupo gave a varied and pleasant entertainment at Richmond. on . Monday evening. It consisted of vocal and instrumental music, the latter being ! undertaken by Mr and Master Jacobs, ' aad acrobatic feats, those on the treble j trapeze being especially good. The entertainment concluded with a farce. Stabbing. — Stephen Matthews was I brought up again this morning before j the Hons. Ti Renwick, and N.Edwards J.J. P. on the charge of stabbing his wife, and was committed for trial. His wife and daughter, a young girl of about 14 years of age, being unable to find sureties for their appearance at the Supreme Court as' witnesses were committed to gaol until the time of the trial. Seeing that under the "Offences against the Person Act " the Justices had the power to send'the man to gaol for six months, and after tbat to bind him over to keep tbe peace for six more months, it surely would have been the means of saving the country considerable expense, nnd of avoiding great ! inconvenience to the witneesess, while j a|l the ends of justice would have been seryed, had the prisoner been dealt with summarily. Football. — The match Artillery v. Town and College Clubs will be played out on Saturday afternoon next. The game will commence at three p.m., and both sides are doing' their utmost to bring a good team into tho field, as the match will most probably be decided on tbis occasion. " Life Assurance Companies Act, 1873." — We are requested to call attention to the advertisements that appear in another part of this paper, on the subject of the Registration of. Policies of Life Assurances in terms of the above Act. Tho Act requires that

ail companies carrying'on tho business of Life Assurance in New Zealand shall deposit cash or Government securities with the Public Trustee to the extent of .65000 , which is to be increased as tbe business of the company goes on until it reaches the sum of £20,000. These sums the Act requires the Public Trustee to hold in trust for policy holders, being such in respect of policies issued in the colony by the company making such deposits, whother the policy has been grunted beforo or after the passing of the Act, providing that such policies, if granted before tbe commencement of the Act, be regisferod within twelve months from such commencement (November 1, 1873), or if granted after the passing of the Act, within six months after the making thereof. It will follow from the above, that holders of policies granted on or after the Ist of November last must register before tho six months have expired, or they will forfeit the benefit conferred by the Act. The Australian Mutual Provident Society has given the holders of its policies the opportunity to register them, so that it now rests with those policy holders to avail themselves of the privilege.
