LAST NIGHT'S COUNCIL.

The Council met afc five o'clock. Mr Ivess moved, " That the Superintendent be requested to place on the Supplementary Estimates the sum of £100 for the purpose of subsidising the miners of Soldier's in constructing a horse track from Reefton to Soldier's. Carried on a division by 15 to 3. — Mr Donne moved, "That his Honor the Superintendent be rr quested to place on the Supplementary Estimates tbe sum of £1000 for the construction of tbe Nile bridge, Charleston; and tbat it be a recommendation from this Council that the construction of the said bridge should be one among the earliest of the works undertaken." The Provincial Secretary moved tbe adjournment of tbe debate until after the consideration of the Estimates, which, on & division, was agreed toby 11 to 7. — The Council then went into Committee on tbe Estimates. One Warden and Resident Magistrate (Collingwood) £200, agreed to. — One warden (Mr Broad for Wangapeka) also Returning Officer and Registration Officer, £75. Mr Donne proposed that tbe salary be reduced to £50. Ayes, 3 : Messrs Wastney, Baigent, and Donne. Noes, 15: The Provincial Secretary, Provincial Solicitor, Provincial Treasurer, Messrs. Sbapter, Maclean, Corbett, Boase, Kerr, Sharp, Adams, Ivess, Mag u ire, Tarrant, Parker, nnd the Speaker. — Clerk, Westport, £275. Mr Ivess proposed that the figures £225 be substituted. Ayes, 12: Messrs Tarrant, Maguire, Corbett, Ivess, Parker, Baigent, Boase, Kerr, Donne, Wastney, Maclean, Adams. Noes, 5 : The Provincial Treasurer, Provincial Solicitor, Provincial Secretary, Mr Shapter, and the Speaker.— • The items Clerk, Charleston, £225; Clerk, Ahaura, £225 ; two clerks, Reefton, £450, were agreed to. — "Allowance on retirement, S. Rowley, £112 10s," was struck out on the motion of Mr Donne. The following items wore agreed to: — -Gaoler, Nelson, £250; turnkey, Nelson, £150; overseer. Nelsou, £132; matron, Nelson, £50; warder, Westport, £200; food, clothing, fuel, &c, Nelson gaol, £450; ditto, Westport. £450. Inppector of Police ond Relieving officer, £300. An amendment to reduce this to £250 was negatived. Sergeant, Nelson, £160; two constables, Nelson, at £12 per mootb, £.88; four ditto, at £11 per month, £528. District constables — Suburban North, £35; Waimea East and Suburban South, £100; Waimea South, £100; Waimea West, £50; Moutere, £50; Motueka, £50 (An amendment by Mr Tarrant to increase this to £100 was negatived); Riwaka, £35; Takaka, £60; Collingwood, six months, £30 ; Motueka Valley, £50; Amuri, £125; two subinspectors, South-west goldfields, £492 15s; one Bergeant, £237 159; four constables, £876 ; nine constables, £1806 15s; Golden Bay goldfields, eight months, £100. —Mr Gibbs brought up the following report from the Select Committee on the representation of the province :-—" That pn comparing the number of electors in the several electoral districts of the Province and the number of representatives of these districts in the Provincial Council, several unquestionable inequalities are disclosed in the existing representation. These inequalities could, however, in the opinion of your Committee, be only remedied by adding to tho number of the members of the Council — a remedy which, in the present circumstances of the Province, your Committee does not think it expedient to recommend." The Council then adjourned until this evening.
