" Bonfires were blazing " on the hilltops around Nelson Creek shortly after the glad tidings reached that place on Wednesday evening, that the tenders for making the Hochstetter Water-race had at last been accepted. R. Argus. An attempt was made on the night of Sunday, the sth inst, to burn down the office of the Press newspaper in Cbristchurch, and the directors of the Press Company have offered a reward of £100 for information that will lead to the capture and conviction of the incendiary. The Press says — " The incendiary, determined if possible to make his work sure, procured some oil from the machine-room of the office, and poured a quantity of it on the floor of the jobbing room, afterwards setting fire to it. The fire smouldered for some time before it was discovered, and burnt out a large piece of tbe floor, joists, .so. Fortunately alike for the safety of the premises and the block in which it is situated, the fire was discovered early in the evening and extinguished." ! In the high country on Sunday, the sth inst., the Buller river rose 30 feet in twelve hours, but as will be seen by a telegram from thence brought by the Kennedy on Saturday, the damage done was but very trifling.
