TO CORRESPONDENTS.
A letter from Mr C. Y. Fell, relative to tße Colonist's report of what was Raid by him at the meeting of the Board of Works last night, is unavoidably held over until tomorrow.
The Grey River Argus says : — lt will be gratifying to everyone interested in (he welfare of the Grey Valley to learn that the Government have accepted tenders for the coostruction of the Nelson Creek (better known as the Hochstetter) water-race. There were several tenders, both for the work as a whole, and for particular sections, and Messrs Roche and Co., of Ilokitiku, are the successful tenderers for the first three sections. The lowest tender for the fourth section is not yet madß public, but we believe it i 8 that of a Charleston contractor. Messrs Rocho and Co's cootract is, for the three sections, £22,075 11s Id. The officer appointed to take the census of the Martin's Bay settlement reached Dunodin a few days ago. He reported that he had met the collector from Hokitika at Big Bush, thirty days out, who asked that he should be reported; he wns injured in the knee, nnd had met great difficulties. He might take fifty days to return. The Hokitika enumerator stated he crossed thirteen rivers, and lost his swag- He would attempt to return by the Haast river, where there were nine miuers. During the recent sittings of the Supreme Court at Hokitika, his Honor Judge Richmond had frequent oocasion to tone down one or two gentleman of the long robe who appeared affected at intervals with a cacoethes loquendi. On one occasion his Honor excused the remarks as the speaker had evidently forgotten for the moment that he was addressing the Court; on another occasion his Honor was pleased to note that if the learned gentleman was citing the cases in question in order to afford himself time to consider what his subsequent arguments should be there might be some excuse for the citations, beyond that he could see none.— TV.
