STOKE SCHOOL.

The pupils attending the Stoke school were recently examined by the Rev. G. H. Johnstone, accompanied by Mr W, Rout, (chairman) A.Harley, and G-. F. Mat tin, members of the School Committee. There was a marked improvement observable in the attendance at this school, the register bearing fully 60. names, with an average attendance of 45 children, and a very full attendance for the examination. The instruction given waa unusually sound and excellent, and in English, reading, dictation, geography, aud arithmetic — ascending up to the very highest rules which are usually taught — bs well as in writing and grammar, left nothing to be desired. The plain sewing, for which special prizes were offered by Mrs Barnett, was also found to be most creditable to the girls by whom their prizes were well merited. The general tone of the school aleo struck the Examiners as excellent. They feel that the parents and the district are much to be felicitated on having so sound, so patient, aud so experienced a teacher among them as Mr Barnett, so admirably seconded, too, by those who are engaged with him in the work, and they cannot too earnestly or. too feelingly impress upon the parents of the pupils the absolute neceasity of sending their children to the school, with the utmost regularity that is attainable, so that these undoubted advantages may be realised to the utmost. The prizes were then awarded according the subjoined list, a special extra prize having been awarded by r the Committee to Charles Harley, who stood first in various subjects, and had been instructed with all the care, diligence, and exactitude which is usually to be gained only from an English tutor : — First Class — General proficiency : Charles Harley, 1 s Alice CondelJ, 2 ; Ann Giblin, 3 ; Ada Cresswell and Jabez Norgate, (equal) 4. Arithmetic -—Charles Hayley. . Second Class—General proficiency : Bertha Cresswell. Heading : George Rout. Writing : Elizabeth Walker Arithmetic : George Rout.
